3 Needles

3 Needles is a film that looks at the struggle against AIDS through the lens of situations in three different cultures: “a novice nun in Africa tries to educate villagers in safe sex; in China a black-marketeer collects illicit blood donations; in Canada a porn star hides his occupation and his illness from his mother” (NYTimes).

In particular, here’s what the NYTimes synopsis says about the novice nun:

Sister Clara (Chloë Sevigny) is a young nun who is working with two, more experienced, missionaries (Olympia Dukakis and Sandra Oh) in a village along the African coast. Sister Clara finds herself struggling against ignorance and misinformation among the natives, but discovers she can only accomplish so much through traditional means and is forced to make a great personal sacrifice for the greater good.

Shawn Ashmore, Stockard Channing, Lucy Liu, and Tanabadee Chokpikultong also star in this film. 3 Needles is written and directed by Thom Fitzgerald.

It is due to be released on December 1, 2006. Check out the 3 Needles Web site and the movie trailer at Bigfoot Entertainment.

Director Thom Fitzgerald says this about his movie:

The film is really a prayer, which is an admission I am reluctant to make in this day and age. But the truth is, the storytelling and characters were inspired by my own questions to God, and the making of the film a meditation on finding answers to the unanswerable.” (See Director’s Note at the 3 Needles Web site)

I recently saw 3 Needles. I’m still trying to decide if I “like” the film. What are your thoughts now that the movie is released?

I totally forgot about the film. I’m going to see if I can get it this weekend and I’ll let you know. Your reaction to the film intrigues me. We’ll have to chat about it soon. Sister J
