During a noon audience on September 24, Pope Benedict XVI spoke beautifully about Sister Leonella Sgorbati, the sister who was recently killed in Mogadishu, Somalia. Sister Sgorbati, a Consolata Missionary, was 65 years old and had worked in Africa for 35 years.

According to the Catholic News Service, Pope Benedict said that Sister Sgorbati exemplified the “logic of Christianity” by working for the victory of love over hatred.

Here’s an excerpt from the CNS article:

“These words [about peacemakers] bring to mind the witness of so many Christians who, with humility and in silence, giving their lives in the service of others for the cause of Jesus Christ, work concretely as servants of love and therefore as artisans of peace,” the pope said.

He said some, like Sister Sgorbati, are asked to make the supreme sacrifice of their own lives.

“This sister, who served the poor and the little ones for many years in Somalia, died pronouncing the word ‘forgiveness.’ Here is the most authentic Christian witness, a peaceful sign of contradiction that demonstrates the victory of love over hatred and evil,” he said.
