Story of the Universe

I started a new online course last week called Story of the Universe. It is offered through The Earth Literacy at Home Program. Here’s a short clip about the course:

The course covers this history of our Universe, from the Flaring Forth to the world we live in today. The spectacular and violent creativity of the processes leading to the emergence of Earth, the creativity of the evolutionary intelligence that transformed molten rock into the splendor of the savannah, and the awesome adventure of our hominid ancestors – all this is our ancestral heritage which we will study in order to learn our deep and creative past.

The EarthI’ve always loved nature, wilderness, animals, the night sky … all of it. This course is a great opportunity for me to get the “back story” on our world and also to see where we humans fit in the whole scheme of things. I am particularly interested to see how the universe story (as developed by cosmologists) relates to theology and our own Judeo-Christian story of the origin of things. I don’t believe the two are opposed to one another. But I do have some questions about how the universe story is articulated. I also think we can learn alot from the universe story, especially since we have been rather anthropocentric as human beings which to a point is understandable. But that human-centeredness has often been at the expense of the rest of God’s creation.

More on this as I get into the course…

Have you ever read Bill Bryson’s _A Short History of Nearly Everything_? I borrowed it from my father-in-law and was riveted by it. The premise of the book is that Bill Bryson was on a plane, looking out the window, when he realized that he didn’t know very much about how all the things he was looking at worked. So he went about finding out and the Short History is what he learned. It’s fascinating and funny…and he’s like you in that he finds that plane rides are productive places to think.

autumnrose … nice blog you have. Thanks for the invite over! I’ll definitely be back.

Fran … I’ve not read it but have been tempted many a time to get it. I always hesitate because anyone who suggests that they can cover nearly everything makes me suspicious. But, since I do like well-written, riveting books by people who have insights on planes (it’s all the pure oxygen, don’t you know), I just may have to check it out. Thanks, Fran!

It’s so good that you are one of the ones that “get” the fact that science and God are not opposing forces!! I always explain it as, “Science is simply the process of attempting to figure out God’s creation.”
