Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini

By Sister Julie | November 13, 2006

Today is the feast day of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini who founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in 1880. In 1887 she established many schools, hospitals and orphanages. With the encouragement of Pope Leo XIII, she left her homeland of Italy to set out for the United States in 1889 where she continued her work. Her missionary zeal also led her to South America where she founded schools in Argentina, Brazil and Nicaragua. Mother Cabrini died in Chicago on December 22, 1917, and on July 7, 1946 she became the first US citizen to be canonized.

Saint Frances Xavier CabriniGod our Father,
you called Frances Xavier Cabrini from Italy
to serve the immigrants of America.
By her example teach us concern for the stranger,
the sick, and the frustrated.
By her prayers help us to see Christ
in all the men and women we meet.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Hi Sister! I just wanted to say hi, I actually came across your blog from the article in Time. My aunt has been an IHM for over 40 years now, Sister Rose Lawrence. It is really encouraging to see such a new, strong Catholic presence in the blogosphere. I think we Catholics are finally starting to live up to our responsibility to use media as a means of offering witness to our faith. So thank you for your contribution. I’ll be following your blog now, I’m looking forward to hearing more from you. God bless, Sister!

Greetings Michael and CC … yes it’s true. Time magazine has an article out called “Today’s Nun Has A Veil—And A Blog” and there’s a paragraph in there on yours truly.
Michael … I don’t think I know your aunt. Is she with the Scranton or Immaculata IHMs?

Sister, my aunt is with the Immaculata IHM’s. She actually was the dean of students at the University until this past year, before moving to Miami to do campus ministry. She does know who you are, I think she said you are with the Monroe IHM’s? Well, anyway, any branch of an order consecrated to the Immaculate Heart is perfect in my eyes!
