Silent God

My readings this morning brought me to this beautiful poem written by Edwina Gateley. It is a prayer that I’ve probably prayed before though in different, less poetic words and in various circumstances. It is a reminder to me that God is always with us, calling us, loving us, even when we may feel so far away.

This is my prayer —
That, though I may not see,
I be aware
Of the Silent God
Who stands by me.
That, though I may not feel,
I be aware
Of the Mighty Love
Which doggedly follows me.
That, though I may not respond,
I be aware
That God—my Silent, Mighty God,
Waits each day.
Quietly, hopefully, persistently,
Waits each day and through each night
For me,
For me—alone.

Edwina Gateley, “Silent God,” in Psalms of a Laywoman, p. 22, (51)

Julie:

Thank you for that beautiful poem. Oh, how true it is! I find that sometimes when everything is going wrong, God seems so distant. Then when I finally get the time to sit down quietly and be with Him, He is so lovingly present. He gently comforts me in my moments of dismay.

Great poem.

Yes, we always thought God is silent but not necessarily true. Listen to the wind, the waves of the sea, thunder, the song of the birds, the sound of the firefly; God’s creation.

Finally, listen to the word of God, the Bible and make God’s word powerful in your life by obeying His word.
