Join Religious in Praying for Peace

by Sister Julie on March 30, 2007

ROME, MARCH 14, 2007 (ZENIT.org).- Superiors-general of religious institutes are calling on congregations to observe March 30 as a day of prayer and fasting for peace.

The International Union of Superiors General made the appeal “to participate in a day of prayer and fasting for an end to violence and war in Darfur, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Northern Uganda, Nepal, Colombia, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon and any place in the world where discord and division reign.”

The convocation uses words from Pope John Paul II’s 2002 Message for World Day of Peace: “Precisely for this reason, prayer for peace is not an afterthought to the work of peace. It is the very essence of building the peace of order, justice and freedom.”

The superiors-general add: “We think that setting aside one day during Lent to pray together, as members of religious congregations, for peace on earth could have a powerful effect on our world.”

Thank God for this witness!! Although an Episcopalian, my Christian pacifism was cultivated by the Catholic Worker tradition. I’m so grateful for this day of peace prayer!

Today we observed a day of fasting and prayer in our community. At noon we had a prayer service in our front yard. We were joined by members of a nearby parrish, our students, parents and other people that want peace for our world. May the Lord bless and protect all the little ones of the Kingdom.

I heard your interview on NPR and enjoyed it. I like your site but was a little mystified by the header since you are located in Michigan?

You have a wonderful opportunity here to demystify the life and role that you have consciously chosen to take on. I think that is wonderful and wish you this site the best.

Hello and Good Afternoon!

I just recently switch my blog from Blogger to Wordpress and was browsing the sites and came upon yours.

How wonderful this is!

I am a certified Reflexologist and Reiki practitioner who’s work touched deeply upon spirit. I was raised Catholic, but have discovered my own personal relationship with God. I consider myself a Mystic (which I’m sure you know much about). It is quite a challenging lifestyle in todays world of “manifestation”, “intention”, and “making something of your life”. I joyfully and happily allow God to give to me whatever it is that He feels appropriate for my lessons here on this earth. I wasn’t always this way (and sometimes STILL struggle with Power) - however, since I was a very young child, I always knew deep in my heart that I was here to be created “through” - yet it took quite a long time to arrive at this place. But to be honest with you….it’s the only “way” that feels “true” to me. So I live it.

For the past two years I have been volunteering with the Sister’s of Mercy, who have a spiritual ministry here in Philadelphia, that offers free bodywork modalities to those in the community that are infected and affect with the HIV virus. Needless to say, it has been the greatest piece of Grace that God has given my life. Not only am I able to give…..but also receive healing.

The Sisters who have created this ministry, give “new meaning” to sisterhood. The organization is very down-to-earth and welcomes all people of all spiritual faiths. It was designed for individuals to connect with whatever God they believe in, and enforces no philosophy. It’s a place of “neutral spirituality”. It’s wonderful!

Thank you very much for hosting this blog. In your “own unique way” you are opening the eyes of many individuals to knowing that God celebrates our “human-ness” as well as our “spirit-ness”. And that He loves us in “total-ness”.

I will be returning on a regular basis to check out your posts. Please feel free to visit my blog if you have the desire, so you’ll get a clearer understanding of my friendship with God.

Bless you and be well,
Ron

Thanks for the comments.

Scotty … I do not have a podcast; I ramble enough as it is with writing. :) I’ve not read much by either Thomas Keating or Thich Nhat Hanh but what I have read I have liked. I did read Keatings’ book The Human Condition which I was impressed with. I love Thomas Merton’s writings and am happy to stick with the “original” Merton.

Pam … you’re the first one to notice that and comment on it. The banner is from a photo I took while in Tucson, Arizona for a writing workshop/retreat a few years back. I spent a lot of time hiking in the desert at Saguaro National Park which is adjacent to the Redemptorists’ Retreat House (Picture Rocks).

Ron … I appreciate your comments and will definitely check out your blog. I’m glad to hear about your experience with the Sisters. Keep up the good work!

I came to this blog while researching linkages of Reiki practice and services to the Sisters of Mercy. I’m an RN working at a Baltimore hospital which is part of the Mission of the Sisters of Mercy. Prior to my recent entry into nursing, I’ve been a holistic practitioner and teacher, primarily offering Reiki, the Usui Method of Natural Healing. Ron - I’d love to hear more about the Reiki work you do with the Sisters of Mercy group in Philadelphia. I’m preparing to do a public talk for nurses at my hospital about Reiki, and in in google/Research have found some wonderful references to the Sisters of Mercy services related to Reiki. Can you share more? Please visit my website to respond directly to me via e-mail, if you like. Thank you. Blessings to all… Elaine
