NPR’s Scott Simon Interviews Sister Julie

by Sister Julie on April 1, 2007  J.M.J.A.T.

in a nun's life ministry, blog post

Yesterday the interview I had with Scott Simon aired. I must say, it is very strange hearing oneself on the radio. I was in the kitchen drinking coffee and making breakfast for one of my IHM sisters (scrambled eggs with ham and cheese, if you must know). When Scott announced my name, I thought, “Hey, I know that person….. Oh yeah, that would be me.” Very strange indeed. Anyway, it was an honor and a pleasure to talk with Scott and get to know him a bit as well. I’m also delighted that so many folks who heard the interview have visited my blog and/or left comments or sent emails.

Julie, much of the talk in this area is about your interview on NPR. I listened on the wrong Saturday and missed it. Thanks for posting it again for those whose timing is off by a week.

You spoke well for us active contemplatives who indeed must learn to balance our prayer life with our ministry. Each facet contributes to our participation in the transformation of ourselves and our world– a very powerful and demanding call. Thank you, Julie, for your insightful energy in furthering this transformation.

Dear Sister Julie:
I had just listened to your interview and I thought you did an exceptional job!
There are so many different religious congregation that I hope if a woman is hearing “The Call” she will continue to search for the one who fits her needs.
Wishing you a Happy and Blessed Easter,

Hi Sister Julie,

When I was a teenager, Catholicism was soooooo boring. And the things I hated most were Stations of the Cross,(stand, sit, kneel, stand, knee, sit),processsing around the church in our Easter dresses singing hymns to Mary, religious education class with the Baltimore cathecism and Holy Thursday liturgy along with any Mass that lasted for hours.

Now, at 48, I am a graduate student in history at Providence College and among my academic goals is addressing the stereotying of nuns. Now I love Scott Simon, but could it be his piece on cookie-cutter nuns noted the name of your order at the end of the story? Maybe I missed it at the beginning – where by the rules of journalism it belongs. I pay close attention to this after finding that the syndicated newspaper story about the Sister of Notre Dame who was murdered in the South American rainforest didn’t identify her order to the VERY LAST PARAGRAPH. Rhode Island is the most Catholic state in the union and nearly reader can easily identify the order that taught them in school or religious ed. Our newspaper, of all newspapers needs to be as savvy – or so I told the features editor over the phone.

We must stay on top of these people. Yell at an editor if you see this in your paper. And oh yeah, I am a former newspaper reporter. The talk with Scott, was otherwise wonderful and I intend to be a daily reader. Now off to chastise Scott online before my three hours of Good Friday begins listening to Jesus Christ Superstar – see something good came of my 1970′s upbringing. mary
