Evening Prayer

by Sister Julie on September 25, 2007  J.M.J.A.T.

in blog post, prayer

Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or
weep tonight, and give your angels charge over
those who sleep.
Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ.
Rest your weary ones.
Bless your dying ones.
Soothe your suffering ones.
Pity your afflicted ones.
Shield your joyous ones.
And for all your love’s sake.
Amen.

This lovely prayer is included in my breviary at Compline.

…and all for Thy love’s sake…
Amen.

Whilst at Lincoln College Oxford I first heard this prayer from our then chaplain at Compline which was an opportunity once a week to take a break from being a busy maths undergrad and reflect on life. Ever since I have found it a soothing thought last thing at night as I settle down safe in the knowledge that an angel has charge over us as we sleep.
