Quietly Doing God’s Work

By Sister Julie | April 23, 2008

Don’t miss this article by Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen, “Quietly Doing God’s Work” (April 17, 2008). Here’s a quote from the article:

At approximately the same time the pope was standing in the White House, Sister Carmen Soto was standing in a food pantry on Monroe Street in Mount Pleasant, 3 miles north of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave….

What a wonderful article. It is also a great reminder of the “both/and” nature of our faith, not always an “either/or” choice. In Pope Benedict we have someone who images Christ in his role as Holy Father, one who reflects him on a global scale. But there are also many, many more “nameless” ones, the anawim, whose ministry is to be Jesus out in the highways and byways where others cannot go. Whether it is a parent caring for a child, a teacher standing before a rowdy classroom, a police officer or medical worker who brings God’s healing and justice, all are called to show the loving face of Jesus as best they can in whatever way God needs them.

I agree- a wonderful article and a reminder that God calls differently to people and with different tasks. “We are not all called to do great tasks, but we are called to do small tasks with great love.” (To paraphrase Mother Theresa)

Just remember, those who do God’s work everyday need your support and love too. Give them a hug, tell them thank you, buy them a coffee. They put so much out there that they need to be replenished too.

Just thought your readers might want to know … the priest, Sean O’Malley, mentioned in the news paper article is now a Cardinal. He is believed to be the only Cardinal with an active blog! He has many photos and commentary of the Pope’s visit. http://www.cardinalseansblog.org/

Maybe just maybe there is a small ray of hope. We need to hear more of this…this church that I grew up with and loved and became convinced had disappeared. So many preach love of the poor, so few practise it. So many religious seem no different than the secular world - out for the buck. This is so good to hear. Thank you.
