Participate in Blog Action Day 2008: Poverty

by Sister Julie on September 11, 2008

On October 15, 2008, Blog Action Day has invited bloggers to have a conversation about poverty on their blogs with you, our readers. This is a world-wide effort to raise awareness about, learn about, and find ways to end poverty.

I’m happy to announce that A Nun’s Life will be participating in this effort. On October 15 (feast of Saint Teresa of Avila), I’ll host a conversation around the theme of poverty with you and other readers. I’d like your help in this. I want to know what you’d like to do on this day. Is there a particular aspect that you’d like to discuss? or would you rather focus on fund-raising? or look at the Catholic Church’s social teaching on poverty? Please use the comment box below to offer your ideas and suggestions. If you’d like to help out in any way, let me know that too. I’m looking forward to the day and will write more about it closer to the day.

If you are a blogger, please consider hosting a conversation about poverty on your blog too.

I’ve been trying to think of what I will do myself. The idea of fundraising was not something I had thought of. But I think I may have an idea. I will make a quilt for a Habitat for Humanity family. That organization helps to pull people from poor and inadequate housing. Am I on track?

Absolutely, you are on track, Katney. If I could quilt I’d send you a square. I did a building blitz w/Habitat one year in Monroe. Many of my IHM Sisters (including my buddy Joyce) have been involved. Habitat not only builds houses but provides job training, financial training, etc. Great idea. I’m not sure yet what I’ll do. Hoping to hear from readers.

I’ve added a Blog Action Day button on my sidebar–It will remind me. And as the day comes closer, I have some thoughts back to my India adventure which I can post about.

And in the meantime, thank you, every little bit helps.

Julie, thank you for your willingness to invite conversation and action about local and global poverty. I was cruising amazon.com the other day looking for a book that ‘would call out to me’. Not so surprising Jon Sobrino’s newest book, “No Salvation Outside the Poor” actually startled me into purchasing it immediately. I have been appalled at the paucity of politicians’ words regarding the poverty surrounding us and what we should be doing about it. I am moving into my own conscience formation to keep myself from falling into inhumanity. We have a civilization of poverty and seem paralized to tackle this horrible evil. I do not know what more to say at this time. But count me in for more dialogue and new grace to go with it.

Great, Joyce. Sobrino’s book seems as good a place as any to enter into a conversation about poverty. Here’s a link to No Salvation Outside the Poor on Amazon. We could use it as a spring board. What do others think?

I can do that! Count me in.
