Angels and Wonders

I am pleased to announce that I will be hosting author and speaker
Joan Wester Anderson for a day-long visit at ANunsLife.org!

This Thursday, October 2 — which happens to be the Feast of the Guardian Angels in the Catholic tradition – Joan will visit this blog and discuss her new book Angels and Wonders: True Stories of Heaven on Earth. Joan is the author of numerous books on angels. You can learn more at her website JoanWAnderson.com.

How this works is that Joan will be checking in at my blog from around 8 a.m. Central Time to about 8 p.m. in the evening. Both she and I will be in and out but will try to get to all your questions and comments throughout the day. I’ll create a special post for that day and start the conversation off with Joan by asking a few questions. She’ll respond via the comment section which is open for anyone to write in any questions/comments for Joan. She’s here to engage with you so please come and visit throughout the day. I am so looking forward to getting to know Joan and coming to a deeper understanding of “heaven on earth”.

Read the Introduction of Angels and Wonders courtesy of Loyola Press.

Loyola Press is also raffling an autographed copy of Angels and Wonders. Everyone who joins the Thursday online discussion by writing in (via the comments section) is automatically entered into the raffle. Readers of ANunsLife.org will also be given a special discount code to order the book. Thanks, Loyola Press!

Please join the conversation this Thursday, October 2, and bring your questions and ideas for Joan Wester Anderson.

In preparation for Joan Wester Anderson’s visit, do you have any preliminary questions you’d like her to address? I am thinking of a few myself which I’ll post later tonight.

What made you so interested in Angels? I do believe in them. There is a store in San Francisco devoted to angels. Have you been there?

Some of my questions for Joan …

1. What does the Bible and Church teaching say about the existence and activity of angels?

2. Is there such a thing as good and bad angels or demons?

3. Have you ever experienced or heard an angel and nun story?

4. Since we’re celebrating the Feast of the Guardian Angels, could you explain what guardian angels are and how they are present to us in our everyday life?

5. This may tie in with Brigid’s question … I’d like to know more about your passion for angels, how they help you in your faith journey, and what you most want people to know.

This is my question for Joan: Do you believe that our Guardian Angels are a constant companion to each soul from the moment of birth to death and then on, whether the destination is Purgatory or heaven, and in the case of hell, can we safely presume there would be a parting of the ways? As far as I know St Faustina wrote of visions of purgatory and Guardian angels being there – and visits from Our lady to the Holy Souls.

Hi Joan!
I have a question for you – how do angels help us understand God’s will for us?
Thank you for your time,
Roberta

Oh, I think we missed this page for questions! I’m not sure Joan is still available but I’ll check in with her just in case she has the time.

Joan: Hi, Brigid. I have never been to the San Francisco angel store, but during the 90’s when angel interest was at its height here in the US, there were 230 angel stores! Think of all the jobs available to home-based crafters! It was a wonderful time. I now have about 50 angel store on my mailing list. There are also the New Age-y type, with crystals and such (I tend to steer clear of those), but there are many holy ones, and a lot on line too. I also think it’s very important for us to support these stores, and to buy a book now and then and circulate it (ahem) because these people are engaged in honest labor, and they cannot function without the rest of us.

Joan: Ann, yes, Sister Faustina and other saints who have had glimpses of Purgatory say that angels are with us there. It makes sense, as their job is not complete until they escort us to the Throne for our judgment. There is some difference of opinion as to whether they are assigned to us at the moment of conception or of birth. Most church leaders seem to favor “the moment of existence…” which would be conception. It gives new meaning to the tragedy of abortion, doesn’t it? that all heaven’s plans for this child have to be forfeited.

Joan: Roberta, sorry I missed you yesterday. Angels do help us understand God’s will for us. Of course we know some of that will already, and when temptation comes, our angel will move in and attempt to persuade us onto the right path, without breaching our free will. But often we’re not sure what God has in mind. Which job? What decision? If it’s not a moral question, it probably doesn’t matter in the long run, and if you’re not receiving a clear answer or prod, you can just ask your angel to help you with your decision, and then make it. I have found that if we do make the wrong decision about something, we know it pretty quickly.

Your angel is on your side, so ask him for guidance as to what God’s will is for you.
