It’s a freakin’ Nun convention!
Freakin’ is one of those great multipurpose words which serves to underscore a certain reality. In this case, NUNS. I’m in Louisville for a vocations conference and there are nuns everywhere. Nuns to the right of me. Nuns to the left of me. It’s freakin’ awesome. Forgive me but I just can’t think of a better phrase than that!
In addition to beaucoup d’nuns, there are also religious priests, brothers, friars and monks. (FYI, by religious priests I mean priests that belong to a religious community and take the same vows I do — celibacy, poverty, and obedience — not diocesan priests who do not profess vows.)
My nundar is very sharp so I see nuns everywhere. Last night I went with my IHM Sisters Mary Bea (of hermit crab fame and also my congregation’s vocation director) and Ellen (vocation director for the Archdiocese of Detroit) to a local restaurant. There had to be at least a dozen to two dozen Catholic sisters and brothers and priests there. It was awesome. Of course we ended up knowing people. I met Sister Ruth Harkins, a Scranton IHM Sister (the Scranton IHMs are our cousins — I’m a Monroe IHM), and then on the way home, we ran into the Adrian Dominicans’ vocation director and a San Rafael Dominican who happens to be a friend of mine on Facebook! Crazy!
Then this morning I found my way to the hotel gym — amazing! Every conceivable workout machine. And of course, there were nuns including my San Rafael friend.
So I am having a blast hanging out with my own IHM Sisters and meeting all kinds of nuns. The conference hasn’t even started yet! I’m also hoping to get to know other sisters, brothers and priests involved in vocation work for their communities and dioceses.
I will keep you updated on my experiences here because it is just so cool to be surrounded by “my people”. And to also spend some time learning about how to encourage vocations to consecrated life and the various Catholic vocations. More later.
Signing off from Nun Convention 2008!

I’m so jealous! I accompanied my community’s vocation director to the one in CA, but not this year. Too much $. It was awesome. I returned full of passion for this life. Enjoy! If you see a Sister Lovina, she’s one of mine!
I’ll look for her. What OSF group? I met a Dubuque Franciscan. So many neat people here. So many that I’ve met online but am now meeting in the flesh. It’s a funky experience to go from virtual to live.
Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart. She’s Phillpino, that may help. I bet it is a weird experience to go from virtual to real. I’ll be on retreat with our college students this weekend, but I would have loved to have been there.
I’m sure our Sr. Jane Mary is there from San Antonio, too. The link for the vocations conference has an article about the wonderful work the communities in San Antonio are doing.
Have fun. Remember to bait those hook real good now so we can reel in some vocations! ;-p
Have fun!
This is such an exciting and cool time for you and everyone in attendance.
Enjoy!
