in blog post, catholic sisters and nuns, news on the nunfront

Nunday is here! And we’ve got some cool stuff today. The Oblate Sisters of Providence are featured in the December 2008 issue of Ebony magazine! RUN, don’t walk, to your nearest convenience store and pick up a copy! The story and photos are fabulous.

The article is called “Walking with God” and was written by Kevin Chappell with photos by André F. Chung. The article starts with the single sentence paragraph: “At first, Virginie Fish ignored Him.” The story goes on to tell a bit about Sister Virginie’s vocation story, mentioning that she has now been a sister for 62+ years of which Virginie says, “It is a life of excitement, adventure, dedication.”

The article goes through some of the history of the Oblate Sisters of Providence and where they are ministering today. My friend Sister Marcia Hall, OSP, is also featured in the article. Sister Marcia is a former sociology professor who joined the Oblate Sisters 10 years ago. Says Sister Marcia, “I feel very strongly that I was called to be here, called to do the work that I am doing now.” Sister Marcia is now the vocation director for the Oblate Sisters of Providence.

As I journey this year as a candidate to become an associate of the Sisters of Providence at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, I have become more aware of the different charisms around me in those who have a become members of the community through their vows. Thy are gifted in so many ways . There is no fanfare, no applause, but a continual movement of the love of God wherever they are called to serve. You all are role model in the mission of our Lord to serve in love! Thank you all in your service of God.

Ebony magazine?? How cool! There’s something you don’t see every day.

Cathy … I’ve known other sisters who have “Providence” as their charism too … how exciting for you to become an associate of a Providence community. I feel so blessed to be related to the Oblate Sisters of Providence.

Annie … I know! Pretty cool. Definitely pick up a copy.

As one who was educated by the Oblates and had an aunt who was an Oblate (Sister Mary David), I am tickled to learn about your blog. I loved the Ebony article. Gave copies to some of my co-workers who had no clue when it came to women of color as nuns. God Bless you and the Oblates.

Dearest Sister Marcia:
As you walk in your journey, you must have perceived and understood that your personal blessings have been preordained by our heavenly Father. Your chosen journey has been sent to you by the love of god. Yes, you are correct that you did have a choice…But our heavenly father knows all. You are such a blessing to those who have come to know you. Our loving lord has set a special journey just for you. You will in your lifetime be a great blessing to those you touch with your faith. God makes no mistakes…..god , knew when you were in your mothers womb that you would be a nun. Yes, you are correct that it was your decision, but god guided you on that journey. He is in each of our personal lives. He know of our coming and goings. He will shine his loving light on your path as you grow in the spirit. You have been so special to so many people….some you know of and others you will never have a grasp on the tiding that you have bestowed on them. Only god knows these things. It is through our loving devotional faith that we trust in god. God bless you this day and know that you are never alone….for god lives in your heart and soul…He knows of your love. He watches your coming and going and he is with you until you will journey to heaven. Gaile
