A dearly beloved monsignor taught me how to accept gifts graciously and pass them on quickly. Some lady had donated her little home organ, It was in fine condition but we really had no use for it at the parish or school. Monsignor told us to accept it, send her a thank you note (for her tax purposes as well as for her charity). Then he contacted someone to make a custom, lockable cover for the organ and he donated it to our sister parish in the inner city so that their overflow Masses in the hall could have organ music, too, like the Masses in church. He always looked for ways to make the maximum number of people happy.

Wow, Teri. Isn't it amazing how a slight shift of perspective on our part can give a whole new light to a situation. Thank you so much for writing.

A neighbor of ours left a package with a long poem about having to clean out one of their parent's house this year and how difficult it had been for them. They decided to do their own home this year so that their children would not have to endure the same pain. The poem went on to say they hoped that the items they were giving (discards) would not offend - but also be thought of as an act of becomming "greener" with our planet.

Yes, I eye rolled...until I saw what they had left for me. Here's how I responded to them:

Thank you so much for the lovely Christmas "regift". You left me the big Christmas wrapping bag. Wanted you to know that I had a huge gift here at the house that needed to be wrapped and on my shopping list was "big bag wrapper". You not only gave me a gift I needed, but even went greener as I did not have to make a trip to a store...thus saving gas and time.

And the HUMBLE PIE was served.
