Nun Photo – Sister Mary Grace, OP

Happy Nunday! Today’s Nunday photo reminds me of the countless times I sprained my ankles playing basketball! “Fortunately” I had a coach that wouldn’t take some little sprained ankle as an excuse to not play. He’d load up a big bucket full of ice and snow and make me stick my leg in there until it was so numb that I couldn’t feel the pain (or my sneaker) and could get back out on the court. Ahhh, good times.

Sister Mary Grace, OP

I hope and pray that Sister Mary Grace did not have to do that with her sprains. Sister Mary Grace, a member of the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, sprained both of her ankles and was unable to walk up the stairs to the church. “Thankfully,” writes Elizabeth (who submitted the picture), “we had a ride available to her.” Also in the picture is Sister Elizabeth Ann.

The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Their mission is as follows:

“We are consecrated women first, and so our foremost model is Mary, the Mother of God. Inspired by the charism of St. Dominic, our prayer life comes first so that our apostolate overflows from a contemplation nourished before the Eucharist.”

Blessings to Sister Mary Grace — we hope you are back on your feet! (though it looks like the ride might have been fun!)

Wow! Two sprained ankles. That can’t be fun! Aren’t those the sisters who are always on EWTN? dee

What a great photo and what an accessible building! Those lifts are a great way of making older buildings accessible and I’ve wondered of they give a bit of jazz to life if they are a need for people. The sister’s smile seems like a solid affirmation of that, at least for one in temporary need. Since this order has primarily young women, does the attention to accessibility mean they can accommodate new sisters with mobility issues? Very cool, if so. Dee, I checked out their site and it does look like they have an EWTN ministry, though the primary apostolate is teaching. Their presence on EWTN is deeply moving to a great many in the very sincerely and active Catholic part of the country in which I live.

Jean, I’m the person who submitted the photo. Sister Mary Grace and Sister Elizabeth Ann are two of the four sisters currently at their order’s mission in Sacramento, California. The picture was taken at my parish, St. Philip the Apostle Byzantine Catholic Church. The sisters came for my daughter’s Baptism in January. It is worth noting that just a week before, Sister Mary Grace had completed the Walk for Life West Coast in San Francisco. She was pushed in a wheelchair by some Dominican Brothers.

We had one of those on the staircase in the house where I lived with our Sisters in Jersey City. It wasn’t in use at the time, but had been installed for a Sister who used to live there and couldn’t make it up the stairs. I was tempted to use it once or twice, especially since it took up so much of the staircase that I almost tripped on it more than once!!

These 2 sisters, along with 2 others, are currently missioned to the Sacramento, California Diocese. I hope and pray she heals fast!
