Catholic Sister Remembers Teaching Farrah Fawcett

by Sister Julie on June 30, 2009  J.M.J.A.T.

in blog post, news on the nunfront

Farrah Fawcett has another connection to nuns. She was taught by them! Check out an article in The Catholic Spirit about a Catholic sister who taught Farrah Fawcett when she was in first grade. Here are some quotes from the article “Nun in Farrah Fawcett’s hometown recalls her as ‘first-grader with pigtails’” (hyperlinks added).

Young Farrah FawcettSister Patrice Floyd remembers actress Farrah Fawcett as “a little first-grader with pigtails” at Christ the King School in Corpus Christ, Fawcett’s hometown.

A longtime educator, Sister Patrice, a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, is a former principal of several Catholic schools in the Diocese of Corpus Christi. She said the Fawcett family lived across the street from Christ the King.

Sister Patrice said that when Farrah Fawcett and [Lee] Majors were in town, they often came by the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament Convent to see two of the older sisters who taught Farrah in school. Both nuns have since died. The visits were always in the evening and Fawcett wore a disguise, Sister Patrice said. “The press would go wild when she was in town.”

Many of the sisters knew the star, the nun said. Sister Collette Brehony, a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament who is now director of religious education at St. Gertrude Parish in Kingsville, had been her teacher at St. Patrick School, according to Sister Patrice.

“She was shocked the first time she saw her on TV,” the nun told the South Texas Catholic, newspaper of the Corpus Christi Diocese.

hey nice story, but i had just a random comment….i have quotes of the day on my homepage, and this one today just struck me so I thought I’d share:
“Seek freedom and become captive of your desires, seek discipline and find your liberty.”
It just seems like it applies to religious life or being religious in general. I would love to think about it, but alas job duties call…maybe I can figure it out on the bus ride home. Hope your other readers enjoy it too.

Cool quote — I like it. Who’s it from?

i noticed farrah making the sign of the cross in her documentary about her cancer and wondered if she was a lifelong catholic or if she converted later. looks like maybe she was a cradle catholic after all and even survived catholic school!

I think its wonderful to see that even celebrities like Farrah, can manage to find time to visit their hometown schools and teachers, and remain faithful to the church while living such outlandish lifestyles. I had no idea Farrah attended Catholic School, that was very interesting to hear about. I’m sure having that kind of education made an impact on her life in some way (I know it did on mine!).

Thanks,
Thomas

“and even survived catholic school!”

I thrived in Catholic School (1-12 and Graduate School), and I believe my students did as well. Don’t believe all the hype.

Sr. Patrice Floyd is one of our sisters (I live with her.) We prayed for Farraw very often and sent her cards. The Sisters have fond memories of her visits.

Farrah seemed to handle cancer better than some people. I’m sure her upbringing in and closeness to a faith based school, church and community helped her during her illness.

Rest in peace, Farrah…I’m sure the real Angels were waiting for you….
