Are you laboring?

It’s Labor Day here in the U.S. (a holiday we borrowed from Canada) and many are enjoying a day of BBQs, parades, and relaxation instead of launching into the normal work week. But some of us are at work, doing the very thing that this day celebrates.

For Sister Maxine and me, this is a definite work day but it’s one I’m looking forward to because we’re doing good stuff and because the phones and emails are quiet today as others enjoy a day off! So this morning we’ll be working on A Nun’s Life Ministry then taking a break for a quick bicycle ride, then back to work. We’re hoping to catch Julie & Julia, a film that reunites Doubt costars Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, just not as nuns. I’m also hoping that the awesome veggie stand across the street is open so that I can pick up these beautiful light green peppers to make some yummy snacks for tonight. My friend Judy gave me an awesome recipe for pepper “boats” filled with shredded zucchini, sharp cheddar, and other delicious things!

Oh and we’re going to be on air and in the chat room at noon Central Time today (timezone converter). Join us for Praying with the Sisters podcast at http://anunslife.org/live.

So that’s our plan. What’s going on with you today? Are you indeed laboring?

Sisters, it seems you’ll have a great day today. Watching J & J is one of the nicest thing to do. And then when you get back home, try to prepare one of their recipes as seen from the movie. Where can you get the recipe? Try the internet.

Sr. Julie – I hope you really enjoy the film. Just a heads-up, though, you will want to have either a full stomach or lots of snacks while you watch. Have a great labor day!

Thanks for the tips, UP and Tomasino! We’re still working away so I’m hoping we don’t run out of time for the movie.

I am done laboring for the day! This morning I gardened: transplanted, replanted (new plants and the old) and of course weeded. Rest of the day will be doing genealogy and spending time with my brother. And – listening at 1pm my time to Praying with the Sister’s podcast.

Enjoy the movie Sister Julie and Sister Maxine!

Sr.Julie,
Holidays like this especially (not that much fanfare) are really easy for nurses to forget, cause of the need for 24/365 coverage.
And on top of that, depending on where you work ,like E.R. L&D
you can even be more busy than normal. So you are definitely not alone laboring on Labor day.Strangely enough L&D (labor&Delivery) can be super busy, although that can happen anytime in those areas.Still is funny though when L&D is full on Labor Day.Enjoy whatever time you have free

I have been in labor for a least two weeks straight as I prepare for my big move back to the provincial house and community living. I have been ministering to sick family members for 13 years (13!) Tomorrow will seem as if I am entering all over aagain.

Back to sorting/purging/packing.

Peace!

Sr. Julie,
I do realize this is not todays topic,I’m behind a few days. The other day when you were talking about terrible nun movies &/orTV
shows I didn’t tell yu I do know of 1 that I really liked is called Brides of Christ. It is set in Australia, just after the finish of vatican 2,& just tells the whole story about the difficulty some orders & some sisters had adjusting to all the new rules, even implementing the whole deal slowly. If you get the opportunity to see it,watch it.If I can find my directions to my CD/VHS recorder/player,I’ll make a copy for ya.Sounded like you had nice day where you are, getting in some biking. Here in Tx,fnally stopped being over 100 every day,but the humidity is real hig,no biking here, just swimming.Enjoy!!! Sue, i LOVE Brides of Christ. We have a copy of the whole series but thanks for the offer! we never got out to see the movie — worked on and nearly finished a first brochure for A Nun’s Life Ministry!

Well, we actually labored and partied. This morning I cleaned out and organized my file cabinet (yuck)! My husband painted the trim in my daughter’s bedroom. She just kind of hung out, helped a bit and read. Then at 2:00 we went to a BBQ and just returned now at 8:30. Had a lot of fun socializing, swimming (well, the kids swam), eating, drinking … and talking about the various Knights of Columbus/new biker ministry and art activities around town! dee

I haven’t done anything worthwhile today… but that’s only because this is my only day of summer break so I figured that I could do nothing for one day. (I had to do math all summer.)

I went to Mass, then breakfast, then came home and watched the Princess Bride, which by the way is a fabulous movie!, then read a book, and after dinner we played Hand and Foot (a card game) and that’s about it. =) It was really fun!

I ventured out to my college alma mater and met up with one of my best friends and visited with the English dept. (I practically lived there during my 4 years of college). I missed them! My college doesn’t close for Labor Day so everyone was on campus. This is my second year having Labor Day “off.” I took Friday off from work too so I loved my extra long weekend!

Sr. Julie,

You should definitely make a date for the movie–it is awesome and totally funny! I took my mother for her birthday and she laughed out loud–it was great to see joy on her face after so much time spent caring for her mother.

I saw Brides of Christ years ago when it first came out–it stars Brenda Fricker supported by a very young Naomi Watts and Russell Crowe. I think I recorded it on –yikes!–VHS, so I might have to look it up.

As for laboring–my seminary classes start today, so I am hard at work on the intertestamental period, the meaning of seelsorge, and Greek vocabulary. Any and all prayers are welcome!
