Friday is here and that means it’s time for Nun News Roundup podcast day. One of the stories that we are going to talk about today is on the Eucharistic Congress which starts today in Washington, DC. As I was pulling together information about the Congress, I stumbled upon one of the presentations. It’s called “To Be Lovers of Life: The Legacy of My Mother, St. Gianna Beretta Molla”. Did I read that right? I wondered …. “my mother, Saint Gianna”? I don’t think I remember ever having encountered a saint whose still had a living child upon being canonized. Do you know of any? If so, let us know — comment below or join us during the live podcast in the chat room.

Here are the other stories we’ll be chatting about …
- a Catholic Sister who knows a thing or two about uranium — Who’s Who in Green: Dr. Rosalie Bertell, Anti-Nuclear Nun (September 5, 2009). Sister Rosalie Bertell is a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart, a nuclear science researcher, a human rights activist and author of The Impossible Will Take a Little While
- remembering Mother Teresa of Calcutta — Christians, Hindus and Muslims remember Mother Teresa, a woman of “Charity in Truth” (September 5, 2009)
- the Eucharistic Congress and Saint Gianna Beretta Molla
- a new book called Loreto in Australia
(2009) about the Loreto Sisters of Australia who were founded by Mary Ward.
- how a nun figures into the creation of Hummel figurines — Hummels Regain Fragile Foothold on Life (New York Times, September 8, 2009) about Franciscan nun, Sister Maria Innocentia, born Berta Hummel
- an interesting coincidence for Sister Julie — meeting one of the nuns we reported on during last week’s Nun News Roundup at the meeting of Sisters and Brothers of Immigrants
- a nun birthday — Sister Maxine and Sister Julie celebrate the natal anniversary of their friend Sister Mary Jane of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

We just dropped one of our prenovices off at the train station to head down to D.C. for the Eucharistic Congress. It sounds like a fantastic event.
I’ll be in class during your chat time (taking a Latin exam…uggh) but your topics du jour sound fascinating. I can’t think of any saints canonized while their children were still living. The closest I can think of is Jacinta and Francisco Marto, two of the children to whom Our Lady appeared at Fatima, becoming Blessed while their cousin Lucia was still alive. But it would be fascinating to find out of any others.
Hope you’re doing well
One thing that I really love about Saint Gianna is her wholehearted embrace of her vocation to marriage. She has been a great example to me in embracing my vocation to the religious life. I would highly encourage any and all women who are discerning their state of life to read more about her story.

Totus tuus Maria!
Well, Maria Gorretti’s mother was present for her canonization (or was it beatification? both?) Does that count? Her killer was also present. Imagine!
I love reading about the saints. My sister recently brought out her Holy Childhood stamp book from the 60s. We would purchase a stamp of a saint for 10 cents and put it in our book by a short bio on that saint. When you collected all 54 stamps, you got to name a “pagan baby.” I always named mine after my Italian relatives. My youngest sister named hers after The Brady Bunch!!
Sister Sandra Schneiders has a new article on NCR: “Discerning Ministerial Religious Life Today”. I am just starting it and it looks great. Jean
