This past weekend I was home in Monroe at our IHM Motherhouse for a gathering of sisters from the Oblate Sisters of Providence and the 3 Immaculate Heart of Mary communities (Immaculata, Scranton, and my community of Monroe). This is the fourth year that I have been part of this group. I’ve written in the past about what the group is like (see posts from 2006 and 2007) so today on Nunday I thought I’d share some photos of our weekend gathering in Monroe, Michigan, at our IHM Motherhouse. Julie, the OSP IHM website is great–leave it to Fran to do a wonderful job! I was particularly impressed and touched by the Statement on Racism–particularly on its honesty. I met yesterday with my area chapter (area chapters are our congregation’s second level of governance) and our focus was a prayer, faithsharing, and action statement on diversity. It was the second part of diversity packet compiled by our diversity committee, hopefully to help each of us become more aware of and in tune with the diversity (or lack of diversity) in our own lives. A lot of our faithsharing centered on the idea of what we really mean by “radical hospitality”–a term which played a major role in our last general chapter. Is the phrase one of just “pretty words” or are we really open to embrace all that it implies? Quite a challenge, I’d say!
Radical hospitality! Beautiful words, life-altering implications. As someone discerning a Benedictine monastic vocation, I am watching and learning about hospitality as an integral part of Benedictine life. The community in which I am living has deliberately chosen to embrace what I think is the depth of hospitality. It is more than saying “you’re deaf, I still accept you; you’re gay, I accept you; you’re black, I accept you; you’re Iraqi, I accept you.” It’s more a “you’re deaf, gay, black, Iraqi….and I want your life to touch mine, I am not afraid of your life touching mine.” The end of prejudice, I think, will be when the only thing that matters is the God-gift that each person brings to the table of our lives.

It is indeed, Michael! Were your ears burning this weekend? Sister Mary Anne asked if I was still in touch with you and we chatted a bit! I’ve known Sister Mary Anne since 2004 when we were appointed to an intercongregational steering committee. She’s been a friend ever since. A good nun!
Haha, they were! She e-mailed me and told me about it. She is a wonderful nun – a wonderful woman! It’s funny, but I’m living with someone now whom you know, Fr. Kevin DePrinzio. His aunt is an IHM who just recently took Sr. Mary Anne’s place as Superior at St. Francis de Sales in Philly. Small world!
I grew up next door to Sister Mary Anne. Knowing her and having known her family has been in blessing. Every now and then I type her name on line and see what she has been up to.
