Wisdom from Wisdom
I am home at the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe, Michigan. Sister Maxine and I have meetings through Sunday. As always it is great to be home. Last night we did our first live podcast from the Motherhouse. Sister Joyce Durosko, our nun and good friend, joined us for the podcast. It was a delight to be with her and with so many folks who joined the podcast for evening prayer. We’ll be on again tonight at 6 p.m. Central Time (your time zone) at http://anunslife.org/live.
Today’s readings for prayer are from Psalm 19 and the Book of Wisdom. I found the reading from Wisdom rather captivating. Here’s a part of it:
In Wisdom is a spirit
intelligent, holy, unique,
Manifold, subtle, agile,
clear, unstained, certain,
Not baneful, loving the good, keen,
unhampered, beneficent, kindly,
Firm, secure, tranquil,
all-powerful, all-seeing,
And pervading all spirits,
though they be intelligent, pure and very subtle.
For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion,
and she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity.
I love that line … “Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion.” I’m not sure what it means yet but am going to munch on these words for a bit today.
And here’s a beautiful image of Sophia, Holy Wisdom. Sophia is a Greek word that refers to the Wisdom of God and is often seen in Christian mystical writings. Saint Paul also writes of Holy Wisdom in his letters.

What strikes you about Wisdom in the reading or in the image? What bit of Wisdom do you need for your day today?

“Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion.” To me this means that even when we can’t move because of fear, uncertainty or doubt; when we can no longer see the way to the solution of a problem, Wisdom still moves. Maybe not in us, but in others who will help us to move forward, or give us the wisdom to stand still, whichever the case may be. This Wisdom does indeed come from the Holy Spirit. I found myself giving advice to a friend today. I know that it was God speaking through me because I didn’t know what to say or how to comfort her, but God knew, and He used me to tell her what she needed to hear. Have a great podcast, I won’t be on because I’m taking your wise advice and continuing with the Theology of the Body discussion group. May the Grace and Wisdom of God be with you all.
Jeannie, We missed you but are glad that you are continuing on. Look forward to hearing about how it went for you.
Motion is somehow connected to an area over which to move……most usually, I think of the earth and how so much moves over it. On the other hand, Wisdom flows, not necessarily measured by another static body. Wisdom, if we are to be truly wise, must be embraced as she flows.
His Sister Julie & Sister Maxine,
The discussion group is still heavily focused on marriage, but as you said I will have to work with married couples and perhaps one day even counsel them. I am leaving my feelings of discomfort at home and trying to learn as much as possible. I can’t catch the podcast live tonight, but will listen to it when I can. Thanks for the e-mail and I look forward to hearing the podcast. Have a great weekend, Jeannie
