  • How do I chose a religious community when there are so many choices?
  • How long did you discern to become a nun?
  • Is it easy for fully professed religious to change congregations? Do they start over?
  • Do sisters and nuns go on vacation?
  • Can sisters and nuns wear nail polish?

Another Sister Julie, CSSF February 19, 2010 at 12:15 pm

My vocation story is this: I investigated different communities, then I let God do the chosing. I told God that, if I didn’t receive a clear answer as to which community I should enter by the date of my sister’s wedding, the deal was off. (Not the kindest thing to demand of God!) The priest who witnessed my sister’s wedding said, “I hear you are interested in religious life. Which community?” I told him which two (Carmelites or Felicians), and he said, “Oh, the Felicians…” I have no idea what else he said because at that moment the heavens opened and the angelic chorus started singing. I knew I had my answer, and God made sure I got the message because not two minutes after I caught the bouquet!

Now, the call to religious life is not so dramatic for everyone, and I am embarassed that I threatened God. I learned a lesson in humility that day.

As for giving up things that young women enjoy, I have experienced things as a sister these past 32 years that I never dreamed I would ever do. I’ve been in a movie! I’ve sung on stage! I’ve sung for the Pope–twice!! And now I’m writing a book!

I have also touched the lives of so many young children as a teacher. I ministered to my mother for the last 12 years of her life. I have been a missionary in Mexico where I saw an old man in the eyes of a nine yr-old boy. I have created pieces of art that have touched hearts. Last Spring I opened the Scriptures to fourth graders then an hour later, taught arts & crafts to developmentally disabled seniors. I have brought the Eucharist to shuts ins. I have touched the wisdom of our elderly sisters and shared my own with the younger ones in formation. And in all my “doing” I have received so many, many blessings.

I have discovered that religious life is the greatest adventure there is!

WOW….. Another Sr Julie…. U are inspirational! Mayb you threating God make him reward you…. So that you were to recieve the greatest Graces that he could give:

All of these things… How God has been so good to you! Even after you threating him!

You are as you saw truely blessed.

another sister julie—i don’t think you threatened god, really, just made your needs clear. as a sometimes yeller in prayer, i recall that moses was quite vocal in reminding god that he was god. sometimes i think god wants us to remember. anyway, your story was great. catching the bouquet had to be too funny.

Wow another Sister Julie, amazing story. I once, stupidly, asked God if he loved me to give me a sign (and I was very specific). I wanted a piece of blue sea glass. (I was on the beach). After searching for hours I gave up, and on the wooded path on the way home, I found one! God gives us what we need in His own time, not on our time. If only I could have learned that sooner, I would have saved myself a lot of heartache. Thanks again for sharing your life with us.
