The Violence of Love

The Violence of Love is a free eBook containing simple, beautiful meditations from Oscar Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador, who was martyred for his faith and for being a fearless defender of the poor and suffering.

The Violence of Love is a collection of Romero’s words, many challenging to our understanding of what it means to live the Gospel. Spend some time with this book, especially during this day and season that we celebrate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Christ.

Here’s a selection from the book:

How I would like to engrave this great idea
on each one’s heart: Christianity is not a collection of truths to be believed,
of laws to be obeyed, of prohibitions.
That makes it very distasteful.
Christianity is a person,
one who loved us so much,
one who calls for our love.
Christianity is Christ.

- Oscar Romero, November 6, 1977

The Violence of Love eBook is available for free download from The Plough publishing company. You can download it in English or Spanish and in a variety of formats. If you’d like to buy a print copy, click here for Amazon.com.

Thank you for drawing attention to the admirable work of Plough Publishing, the creation of members of the Hutterian faith. Two communities of the Hutterian Bruderhoff are in close proximity to our monastry in Esopus, New York. Their members, especially the school teachers with their classes frequently stop by for visits. Every Christmas they come to sing carols for us. We are often invited to their Maple Ridge and Rifton communities for special events. We are connected by our faith in Jesus Christ and our belief in a radical way of following him. We are also connected by shared commitment to world peace, mutality in care and service within the local community and our nation, and concern for the environment. How like them to provide, through their publishing arm, The Plough, free e-books in service of the Word.
