Honoring Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Normally a pilgrimage is when people set out on a journey to visit sacred places and holy people. But this pilgrimage does it the other way around!
Catholic News Agency, Jul 15, 2010 – Relics of Blessed Mother Teresa are scheduled to visit several cities across the Midwest this weekend, as part of a tour of the United States and Canada. The tour is being held in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the sister’s birth on August 26.
The relics are in the care of the Missionaries of Charity, the religious order founded by Mother Teresa, and include her sandals, crucifix and rosary, as well as a lock of her hair and drops of her blood contained in reliquaries.
The tour has already traveled through Boston and Baltimore, among other cities, and is scheduled to make stops in Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota in the coming days. (source)
In two days, Mother Teresa’s relics will be present at Saint Mark Church in Gary, Indiana, not far from Sister Maxine and me. Mass time is 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. We are hoping to make it there and if we do, we will share our experience with you. Has anyone else had the opportunity to see the relics?

This is a great post. I wrote a similar one a few days ago about Mother Teresa’s relics being shown in Chicago. The link is here if you’d like to read it. http://www.mycatholicblog.com/?p=83 God Bless!
Thanks, Claire!
Wow, that’s cool, Marla. The closest I came was staying with the Missionaries of Charity in Tijuana and using the shower bucket that Mother Teresa had used. I feel bad that Mother Teresa went through such dark times, but I’m also a bit consoled that even the saints among us struggle like I do. I think the fact is not that they struggled, but that they didn’t give into the darkness or despair, they opened themselves to allow God to transform them. See the Big T .. Teresa of Avila … “let darkness be my light“.
haven’t seen them. the sandals appeal to me most, for whatever reason.
i did get to see and hear mothere teresa speak in atlanta once. as she got back on her bus i was maybe three feet from her and i felt the presence of god. interesting that in her book she wrote of being in a dark place, separate from god for over the last 50 years of her life, because god certainly worked through her.
I sadly not have the opportunity to be a part of such a viewing (doesn’t appear like my location is listed as those spots). Nevertheless, I want to thank you, Sister Julie, with sharing this. I have always admired Mother Teresa because she was truly a woman who loved unconditionally, in very poor and difficult conditions, with lil’ resources, yet she always illuminated (at least to me) this warmth in how she held children in her small arms or how others would gather around her, as if they felt and were drawn to her positive energy and loving soul. To me, it is what makes all the difference! I do hope that if you and Sister Maxine do get the blessed opportunity to experience this exhibit and soak in the energy, you can share w’ us all how amazing it was and what you gathered through that experience.
you used her shower bucket? that is amazing.
i have the utmost respect for the missionaries of charity. i do hope many people see the exhibit.
teresas are pretty amazing, no?
I got to see some of the missionaries of charity while at the International Eucharistic Congress in 2008 in Québec City. They all seemed to radiate this sereneness. They had a lot of literature to distribute about Mother Teresa. I picked up the Novena booklet and have prayed it several times. Showering with her bucket sounds really cool. Hugs and blessings to you all.
Gracias, Nahuel.
I may be able to get there. I’ll be in the Cities on Monday, but should really be on the road before Mass starts, let alone waiting until afterwards. We’ll see. How long do you suspect the Mass will last? Probably a tad longer than normal, eh?
