Nun Wonderland
I am home. Yesterday Sister Maxine, a friend, and I traveled from Chicago to Monroe, Michigan, for a week of nun goodness. I am so happy to be home. The minute I set eyes on the front lawn with it’s well-trod paths cut through tall grass and wildflowers, the brick motherhouse with the sun reflecting off the windows, and the trees and birds and sounds and smells that I know to be home. And yes, nuns. Lot of them. I am so delighted to see my IHM sisters. The vast majority of our sisters are home from across the globe for three days of contemplative reflection followed by a big community celebration of Jubilee and Final Profession.
Honestly the excitement and joy of being home at the IHM Motherhouse never gets old. I am reminded each time about when I first came here, about all of the goodness of my sisters, about how cool it actually is to be an IHM Sister. I outgrew the “honeymoon” phase pretty quickly but what I never expected was to continue to keep this sense of joy in all of my interactions with my community and the ways we collectively relate to God and live the empowering mission of Jesus Christ.

Today I am running some errands, writing a blog post, and then getting ready for my Mission Unit meeting (our community of 400+ sisters is organized into smaller units in which we learn, pray, and work together on our IHM mission and direction). Our IHM associates are also part of our Mission Units. We have a great group and good agenda for today. In our group are 3 sisters who will be celebrating their Jubilee this weekend. A Jubilee is the anniversary of when a sister entered or professed vows in her religious community. We have a big celebration each year in July for sisters celebrating their 25th (silver jubilee), 50th (golden jubilee), 60th and 75th (diamond jubilee) anniversaries.
