Ask Sister podcast is a live podcast where you have the opportunity to engage with us and ask questions about nuns, prayer, religious life, or pretty much anything in between!
This is a SPECIAL EDITION episode as we broadcasted live from the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe, Michigan. We were joined on air by two of our sisters — Sister Mary Ann Hinsdale, IHM, Associate Professor of Theology at Boston College, and Sister Katherine Collard, IHM, Director of Liturgy & Adult Faith Formation at Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Roanoke, Virginia. Plus you’ll hear the live studio audience of IHM Sisters and Associates and some folks from A Nun’s Life community who were visiting.
Here are some of the questions we addressed in this Ask Sister podcast:
- Could you each tell us a little about your ministry?
- When did you first think you might want to be a nun?
- What do you find helpful in your prayer life? What might you recommend to others?
- Why does God feel so distant sometimes?

Hi Sister Julie, I need some help and advice from you. I’ve been praying for God to reveal his will and what vocation he wants me to follow. I’ve been told by my spiritual director that I’m called to be a nun. at first I doubted, but now I feel he is calling me to religious life but I have a problem. I have a debt (personal loan) that I make monthly payments to pay off. I want to enter a convent and begin my life as a nun but this debt is in the way. My father went overseas for 3 months to try to sell his land so he could help me pay it off, but he was unable to sell his land and came back empty handed. I prayed the whole time to God asking him to send someone to buy my dad’s land if it was his will for me to be a nun and it didn’t happen. But still, deep down I feel God is calling me. I spoke with the mother superior of the order I wanted to join about the option of ‘bankruptcy’ because I can’t pay off the loan and am unemployed, she didn’t like the idea of me having a bad name at the bank. . So now I can’t do anything but try to find work to pay off the loan which could take at least 4 years. Is bankruptcy a bad thing, against the church? I’m confused if God really is calling me or that i should take my dad’s land not getting sold a sign that God is not calling me for religious life? I live in Australia by the way if that helps. I just want to know if I go ahead with bankruptcy could I still get accepted in a convent or not? Thanks for your help.
Hi Nina, Not sure of what all bankruptcy would mean in terms of canon law, if anything. I’ll see if I can find some more info. You might want to get in touch with local church organizations such as the Knights of Columbus or a sodality — these might be willing to help. You might also consider doing a fundraiser or something like that – locally or on the Internet. I know it can be frustrating to wait but keep faithful to your prayer and learning more about religious life and getting to know the religious community. Turn to God in prayer and listen and talk with God to see how God is speaking to you. God is also present in your relationships with your spiritual director, mother superior and others whom you trust. In the meantime, keep doing everything you can to pay off the debt. See if you can find a pro-bono financial adviser (sometimes the holder of your debt offers help) to help you come up with a financial plan. Hang in there, Nina. My prayers are with you.
Thank you so much Sister! I appreciate your help. I’ll keep in touch and let you know what happens soon.
