Nun Stamp – Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
On September 5, 2010, the United States Postal Service released a new stamp in honor of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. Here’s the scoop:
The United States of America on September 5 honored Mother Teresa with a special stamp marking the 13th anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death.
The stamp features a portrait of Mother Teresa painted by award-winning artist Thomas Blackshear II of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The stamp was unveiled at a function in Washington.
“Noted for her compassion toward the poor and suffering, Mother Teresa, a diminutive Roman Catholic nun and honorary U.S. citizen, served the sick and destitute of India and the world for nearly 50 years,” the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) stated in a note.
The 44-cent stamp shows the humanitarian icon wearing her customary shawl and smiling. (source: Christianity Today)
Always good to see Catholic sisters and nun honored by the public. An important message is that the work of religious must cross boundaries — we do not serve only “our own” but tend to the needs of all people and all of God’s creation. Compassion, care, love, peace, justice — these know no boundaries.
Not sure why the USPS needed to say “diminutive” in their media advisory. Presumably it referred to her height and not her impact on the church and world.
You can purchase the stamp at USPS.com.

of course “diminutive” refers to her height. she was tiny. i don’t think anyone was dissing her.
there are many folks out there who do diss this amazing woman, though. i never will understand their motivation.
Good one, Peggy, and thanks for the link, Clare!
Marla, no, I didn’t think it was meant to be a diss. It’s just such an odd reference. To me anyways. Of all the characteristics they could have highlighted, why her height?
i just meant they couldn’t have meant anything else.
perhaps because she looks so tiny and frail but has done such ‘fantastical’ (yes i know not a proper word, gonna use it anyway) and is truly larger than life with her good works and precious humility
