It is Tuesday and my brain is full of HTML, code, algorithms, hypotheses, and God knows what else. So before I go binary on y’all, I figured it’d be best if I open the floor to you today. Someone start a conversation and let’s all jump in. Shift as needed. GO!

P.S. If reading this via email or RSS, don’t let that stop you from coming directly to the website to offer your comments!

That is awesome news, Lilly-bet. We are looking forward to the great day (October 17)! More on Mother MacKillop from aNunsLife.org.

Cherylene October 12, 2010 at 11:47 am

We are also very excited here in Oz, especially here in Sydney!! Images from her life are even being flashed onto the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge :)

Sister Julie October 12, 2010 at 12:51 pm

You have to keep us updated, Cher! Are you participating in any events?

Clare October 12, 2010 at 3:21 pm

That sounds awsome fun…. Congrats to all the Ozzies! :)

Marg October 12, 2010 at 2:16 pm

The Mother Mary MacKillop story fits in so well with Dr. Peggy’s talk the other night, specifically with sisters seeing a need and filling it (“inspiration”), being ostracized for it (“condemnation”)…all the way to “acceptance.” I may have gotten the terms wrong, but Peggy definitely got the pattern right. I rejoice for Blessed Mary and all her spiritual descendants, and I rejoice for the Church for finally recognizing a saint among us. That’s something to remember: there are still saints among us, recognized or not.

With apologies to Emily Dickinson..,and Sr. Julie:

I’m going binary today. Are you?
Are you going binary, too?
Then there’s a pair of us! Don’t tell!
They’d banish us, you know.
Make one of us 0, the other 1….
Or turn us both to zeros.
Oh-oh! 0 – 0!
It figures!

Gone binary.
Gone binary.
Gone bye-bye!

I absolutely adore this. It is bring printed and posted above my convent desk. :)

Clare October 12, 2010 at 3:25 pm

Oh…. Clare has officially her OWN car… :) Its a 1997 Renault Clio… Sliver and really shiny… lol… Very excited….
Anyone remember their first car?? What year and model was it??? How come you ha to get a new car?? (that is if you still don’t have it :P )

Marg October 12, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Congrats, Clare! Hope you have many happy, safe miles in your Clio! Wasn’t Clio one of the muses?

My first car? A 12-year-old 1955 Dodge Golden Lancer with about 33,000 miles on it, gift of my Great Aunt May, whose birthday is today. She would have been 117! Beautiful car! White top, black hood and trunk, rose sides, and just the beginnings of fins. Came with a St. Christopher medal, of course. I loved it. Freedom! Independence! A way to get to school and to work! When I graduated from college, my Dad insisted that I get a newer car, so I traded the Lancer, but it still has a place in my heart.

Clare, congratulations on your new car!! Very exciting news.

My first car was a 1964 Corvair. The car Ralph Nader condemed as “unsafe”. It was a very ugly pea green and was a convertible (loved that). Drove it for a year then bought a brand new car, my first, a 1973 Plymouth Duster, black with a white vinyl top. I loved that Duster. My brother was driving it one night and was broadsided by a truck. He suffered broken ribs and a broken arm and my beloved car was totaled. He was so sorry but I was just glad he was ok.

Congrats on your new car Clare — my first car… sure I remember mine. My first car was a 1989 Nissan Pulsar NX. It was my first and only male car and I named him Bruno. He was cute — black and slick, two door and T-top… it was my first car (birthday/grad gift from my folks) and I thought I was some big stuffings – lol…. I drove him for a hot minute until he finally gave up and I had to take him away to the Pick and Pull grave sight. I’ve had two cars after that (one who I gave to my bro and one who also ran her stink w’ me… and is RIP in San Antonio Pick and Pull)… and then *drum roll please*
I am a proud momma of a Silver 2006 Honda Civic LX named Storm (I call her Stormie-poo). When I bought her in Feb 2006, she had 5 miles on it and now… phew – fugget-a-boutit… it’s well in the 118,000; she is a wonderful, safe, and smooth sailing vehicle. :)

Eilis October 12, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Congrats on the new car Clare!

Mine was a 1989 light blue Chevy Lumina with a side of rust. By the time I got it, the car was nearing its 15th birthday and pushing 90,000 miles. I drove it for 6 years until it finally gave out. “New” car is a 2001 Pontiac grand am…love that car!

Cherylene October 13, 2010 at 6:19 am

No, unfortunately might be working on the big day SJ. We’re having a big party @ church with the Canonisation screened LIVE there. It’ll be cool – really looking forward to it!!

on a different note:
My first car was a 1984 Honda Accord (in 2001).. loved it ‘cos it had those flip headlights. Always thought “how cool my car can wink” Bought it myself after saving up working in the college registrar’s office. Before that was cycling everywhere – was quite a sight at church ‘cos everyone knew me as the cycling asian girl (small country town in texas, with 3 other asian families) hahahaha

Old Marine October 13, 2010 at 6:30 am

Does anyone know of a web site that helps the parents of daughters discerning the religious life?

Sister Julie October 13, 2010 at 8:10 am

Hi Old Marine, You’d be surprised how many times we are asked that! We couldn’t find much in the way of resources so we created our own … it’s a start anyways. Visit our A Nun’s Life Community Forum, register for free (you’ll be asked to respond to an email asking about your interest in the forum … so we can avoid spammers), then there’s a forum topic called “Parents of Daughters and Sons Called to Consecrated Life”.

Also I wrote a blog post called How to break the nun news to mom and dad? a little while back about kids telling their parents they want to be a nun/monk/priest. Read that as well as the comments because a few parents wrote in too.

evejer October 13, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Hi Old Maxine,
If you check the community Forum, you will see there is a topic started. I have posted a couple of times as my daughter entered a cloister. She was not open with us about her decision which caused alot of pain.

evejer October 13, 2010 at 9:21 pm

Sorry for the slip of the finger on the keyboard, old marine.Forgot to say to old marine to also check the blog that Sister Julie started. I found it very helpful to be able to express myself without any prejudice.

My first car? hmmm …. Oh yes, it was a Chevy Citation that my Grampa had bought (he would buy, fix, then turn them around). Mom had made sure that he chose one for me that was safe. Paid $600 for it. Lovely brown color. And … stick shift. No other stick shifts in the family fleet. I was dying to have one and here it was. No idea how to drive it. Dad knew how to because he’d driven fork lifts and trucks before, but not for a while. Unfortunately, Mom made us a fabulous dinner of gnocchis (Italian dumpling-esque pasta) and we headed out. I stalled and rocked that baby so many times that Dad kicked me out of the driver’s seat and drove home because he was so sick. The day ended with Dad laying on the couch and me getting cold washcloths to put on his forehead. I eventually learned that sweet spot for the clutch, but not without some more inner turbulence, whip lash, and other unpleasant experiences. Thanks, Dad!

marla October 13, 2010 at 3:33 pm

my first car was a 1972 ford maverick, bright yellow with a black vinyl top, ugliest car EVER. the entire dashboard would fall off at random times while i was driving on the freeway and i would have to hold the dash up with one hand while driving with the other. my entire muffler and tail pipe fell off in rush hour traffic, too, and my uncle retrieved it and re-attached it with a coat hanger. sheesh. thank goodness that car is far away and long ago.

anna October 14, 2010 at 6:13 am
