A Shot in the Arm
Contrary to the meaning of the slang term “a shot in the arm”, I experienced neither a boost nor encouragement from my recent flu shot. Rather, I am experiencing something more akin to pain and sleepiness.
Apparently the influenza vaccination is not what folks had in mind with the old “shot in the arm” phrase.
Instead I have this to look forward to in the next few hours and days:
- aches
- fever (low grade)
- soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
- and, on rare occasions, severe allergic reactions (source: CDC)
Joy. Just the shot in the arm I needed for a gloomy Monday.
Well, it’s not all that bad. I know I’m doing my part for my health as the winter season approaches. It’s all good. I guess sometimes a bit of discomfort (sans severe allergic reaction) is good for the soul. At the least it justifies the nap I will be taking this afternoon.

After I had my recent flu shot, I felt as though I had been hit by a Tonka Truck!
I can feel my system shutting down now. It’s just a matter of time before sleep overcomes me. And can I just say “ouch” on behalf of my upper arm?!
I know the feeling, I had to get a meningitis vaccine for school, made me feel dead tired!
I felt like something the cat dragged in and did not put 2 and 2 together until the next day. It heard it’s like a triple whammy shot this season. I had no problem last year.
It’s a attenuated virus so your body tends to mount a response, at least it’ll be better than actually getting the flu!
Hang in there
Thanks, Doc Cher!
You are right, it is much better than getting the flu. Am still feeling funky today. Chloe the Convent Cat made me some vegetarian minestrone soup for lunch. Side of catnip.
Sounds like a really good remedy. I want soup now with a side of mashed potatoes
