I found an interesting article and video from Faith and Leadership (out of Duke University) featuring the great scripture scholar N.T. Wright, former Bishop of Durham in the Church of England. He offers the metaphor of a building in order to understand the institution of church and the community of church.

Take a look at the video and article see what insights and questions come to mind.

Institutions are essential to the church’s mission, but they are not reality, Wright says. They are merely the scaffolding and plumbing that make possible the building called community.
