Police deliver message to nun: “Don’t worry, be happy.”

by Sister Maxine on May 18, 2011  J.M.J.A.T.

in blog post

At 2:30 a.m., I awoke to police lights blinking at my window. Two police cars with their red emergency lights flashing were parked across the street. There were no sirens, and no cars pulled over.

I watched as two officers with flashlights returned to the cars, typed something on their computers, and waved goodbye to each other. Then I heard over the loudspeaker from one of the cars, “Don’t worry, be happy!” and the cars disappeared into the darkness.

It was like a Bobby McFerrin song flashback to the 1980s. I admit that I was never a big fan of the song. Its simplicity sort of annoyed me. But given that the message was delivered in the middle of the night by an emergency vehicle, I pondered its cosmic significance.

Maybe the two police officers routinely made that announcement after responding to calls in the middle of the night. Maybe it was a way to keep the fear of the unknown from having the final word in their lives. Or maybe they saw me, watching from beside the window, and figured they’d offer reassurance.

The incident made me think about the power of affirmations. Don’t worry. Be happy.  They’re simple but compelling words. Happiness doesn’t mean ignoring the future and making decisions based only on the present moment. But too much worry and fear impinges on the capacity for happiness. So today, I’m going to make the best decisions that I can, and consciously leave the rest up to the Spirit. Don’t worry. Be happy.

Is there an affirmation that will help guide you today? If so, please share it in the comment box below!

Nice police! I hope you said a wee prayer for the rest of their night to be calm and safe. :-)

Can’t say I’d want their job (would be sorta scary…) but I do immensely appreciate the work they do — and the sense of humor they showed!

Let go-Let God

Do not worry, pray.

Let Go Let God.
Let Go Let God.

when and if that doesnt work:
one moment at a time
one second at a time
one micro at a time

and when that doesnt work:
“look at you feet and and feel them pull you to the grounded”

Sister Maxine May 18, 2011 at 2:59 pm

Kbart, I love the poetic expression! Makes me think that “letting go” is at its core about “reconnecting” with our truest self, and when we’re in that space, we are free.

Love that solution, KB!

you must have the nice police. in chattanooga, they’ll arrest you for watching out the window if they aren’t in a good mood.

Glad the post helped you, Marla! The police are very good around here — we’re blessed to have such competent women and men in service to the community!
