Landmarks of an IHM Sister
Had a fantastic podcast last night with my partner-in-nunhood, Sister Maxine. The questions that folks asked us on Ask Sister (recording will be up this weekend) were fabulous and we got into some very good conversations. What I love most is the feeling of tapping in to what I love about being a Catholic sister. Conversations like the one last night ignite all these ideas and memories and hopes and feelings of goodness — and i am in awe over how God has taken me in and helped me to find a way of life that fits me — and totally delights me!
There are stories and memories in our IHM tradition that become like landmarks in our life. I was reminded of a couple of them during the podcast that were and continue to be formative in my life. I think we each have landmarks — in our IHM life, we hold many of them in common, just like a family might have landmarks in their collective life. What I’m amazed at is that when I stumble upon those landmarks, they still have the power to make present, as it were, the reality signified — kind of sacramental in a way. These IHM landmarks help me tap into my own self, and into our life of simplicity, humility, and zeal.

An explanation before I answer:
I believe that when we tap into God (aka, pray) we tap into all time because God is present in every moment of history. And when we tap into the timelessness which is God, we encounter those who went before us as well as those who will come after us. That is why the Mass is not a “re-creation” of Jesus’ sacrifice on Calvary–it IS his passion, death and resurrection made present to us.
Therefore, when you have the landmark moments in your IHM-hood, you ARE present to the past event because God was with you then, and God is with you right now, and God will ever be with you.
We Felician Franciscans are building new landmarks in a powerful way right now as we continue the road of reconfiguration. Our first provincial Chapter will be in three weeks (YIKES!) in Chicago. Pray for us!
