It is time to get your existential ON!

Here’s my question for you: What does it mean for you to be happy?

I know, a nice light question, but I really want to know. So many different ways to respond — a good meal, ontological contentment, a silly joke, world peace — I’m looking forward to hearing the diversity of thoughts and what makes happiness “tick”! Use the comment box below to offer your nuggets of wisdom.

And …. GO!

I know that I am happiest when I am in the presence of God especially during mass, or adoration. I know that God is always with me,but I am happiest when I feel his presence. Lately, I have been feeling his presence so much during mass to the point that I am in tears.
Also, when I am among those I know who love me. When, I volunteered at a pregnancy help center, I was very happy, although it wasn’t always easy. When, I am around religious, especially the Nashville Dominicans,Dominicans of Mary and the Sisters of Life.
If you cannot tell, I am discerning, haha. I just know that God is the only that truly makes me happy. I know that is true for everyone, but it is stronger.
watching my little brother grow up to be a wonderful, full of humor little boy and watching him play baseball.
Sunsets and sunrises ( haven’t seen many of those, once at a convent) and looking at the stars at night. When I see snow, I just want to dance in it. When, a ray of sunlight comes down from a cloud. It’s like God is shining his light down on earth.
Seeing that people are searching for the Truth and acting on it.(sadly, our society today does not glorify that)
playing with my dog molly ( a labradoodle)
Babies because they make cute noises and smile so cute
seeing a good movie with a good message
writing poetry when God inspires me
People who can make me laugh
sushi not the raw kind ( I know it sounds weird, but I love sushi and it makes me feel like I am in heaven when I eat it)
Feast Days
CHRISTMAS!
EASTER
THANKSGIVING
doing things for other people especially when they do not ask
Surprises but not all the time
The view from the top of St.Peter’s Basilica ( beautiful)
Reading about the Saints especially Martyrs
St.Therese, Mother Teresa, and St.Rose of Lima( my confirmation Saint),John Paul II, St.Peter, St.Cecilia,St.Dominic,St.Thomas Aquinas
Talking with my spiritual director thank you Bro.Edward
My friends and family
All the blessings I have been given or the list will be even longer
Thank you God for everything that makes me happy, but especially for YOU in my Life. <3

Knowing, really knowing with absolute clarity, that I am loved!

From Wendy via email: “To see someone walking with their groceries past a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road and stopping and giving him something as simple as a piece of fruit to him to help feed him that would make me happy.”

To be at peace with God, my brothers and sisters, and with myself – This is what happiness means for me.

Well, a multitude of things *make* me happy–friends, laughter, activism, selling a story, retreats, podcasts at anl, music, playing games (especially cranium!), singing, having a house full of people, my nephew, my niece…. There are lots of happiness-causing agents.

But I know I am happy when I get through a day with no fear. When I get from waking to resting with no panic, I know I have been occupied with things that make me happy and keep me far from anxiety.

Receiving Jesus in the Eucharist. I’m in Heaven with Him.

I totally agree with KBart! Feeling the presence of love in my life, which is, after all, the presence of God.

The older I get, the more I find that little things make me happy: sudden beauty in the garden, discovering something interesting by accident (like the way a barnacle extends its feathery appendages to feed on the incoming tide), Button, our A Nun’s Life Community, accomplishing something, taking a good photograph, laughing with friends, sharing a sunrise or a sunset, reading a good book, making things (especially things that can be shared), writing, discovering that someone really WAS listening after all, fixing things, hearing from former students, being outdoors especially near the ocean, discovering that I CAN still do things that I thought were long past, a good meal of my favorite foods, especially when shared, campfires and picnics….

Big things like holidays, graduations, anticipated events, even births, all seem to come tinged with anxiety, sadness, complications, screw-ups, frustration, even anger. yup, give me love and small beauty.

When I’m at peace with who God made me, no matter how many times I try to find that peace again, I’m happiest.

I agree with Marg. As I grow older, life takes on a simplicity that is serene and beautiful. Things that make me happy:

The smile on my mom’s face when I walk in her apartment every night!
A hug from a nun!
Sugar-free grape kool-id!
A quiet night and a good book!
The smell of sheets dried outside on the clothesline!
Sunday mass at the St. Francis Home chapel!
Remembering to be thankful for what I have instead of wanting what I don’t!
The smell of an apple-cinnamon candle!
Donating clothing to the local women’s shelter!
My little neighbor boys drawing a maze on my driveway with sidewalk chalk while I’m at work!
Wild roses, forsythia, honeysuckle, peonies!
Fresh raspberries!
Exchanging homemade Christmas gifts with my daughter – we took a vow that neither of us needed more “stuff!”
The first snowfall!
Treating my mom’s tablemates to ice cream sundaes on a hot day!
The smells of Thanksgiving dinner!
Volunteering, volunteering, volunteering!
Living a life of Servant Leadership!
Knowing that God loves me just the way I am!
