These “Jesus shoes” are made for walking…and praying and discerning

We have a special guest blog post from A Nun’s Life community member Joyce Elaine, who reflects on the heart and sole of discernment.

There are sandals that I wear that my closest friends affectionately call my “Jesus sandals.”

They are white and strappy with gold accents, and they do make me think of the sandals that Jesus is often depicted in. They are a special pair in my collection of “Jesus shoes.” I wear them to Mass, and almost always get asked about my discernment there. I wear them to family gatherings and again, I get asked about religious life: “What things can you do as a nun?” ” Do you go to school to become a nun?” I wear them where I pray with my church and sometimes with the nuns I know.

I also have a pair of black shoes that I wear on cold, wet, muddy, or rainy days. When I walk around with friends, the questions still pour out. “Can a nun be an electrical engineer?” “Is a nun allowed to keep her birth/baptismal name?” I also tend to wear these shoes when I am feeling sick or worried. They remind me that I’m carried by God.

My running shoes are also Jesus shoes. I wear them when I run, when I take walks, when I take bike rides, and when I work out. They are what I wear when I feel closest to God–when I am just myself.

What do your “Jesus shoes” look like? Please share your Jesus shoe stories in the comment box below!

I generally have two pairs of “Jesus shoes.” One are my sneakers, which I wear almost every day for every function. I have bad ankles, so my sneakers provide good support for my feet as I go about my day; much like Jesus supports us as we journey through life. My other pair of shoes are my flip-flops. I wear these to Church sometimes instead of dressier shoes or when it is wet and rainy outside. They are easy to come off, and often times I take off the flip-flops and roam around barefooted…even while in Church (sort of reminds me of God directing Moses to remove his sandals because he was standing on holy ground), but also, feeling the wet earth or the grass on my feet connects me to the wonder of God’s nature :)

~ great post JE!

I have one pair of “Jesus Shoes” They are my sneakers. I wear them just about everywhere, as I need the support they offer because of some trouble I have with my lower back. I’ve tried other styles of shoes but the sneakers are the only thing that give enough arch support and shock absorption to the feet which helps with my back issue. I am on my feet most all day working with elementary aged school children and then when I go home my aging parents are there ready for me to start what I call my night job of getting dinner for them and myself, doing some laundry, and etc. My mother has MS and is confined to a wheelchair, my dad has some heart related problems. So my “Jesus Shoes” do look a little rough and beat up because they are constantly on the move as I move from task to task. They are comfortable, and I feel good when I wear them as they keep my feet feeling good and that makes me feel good. Almost comforting like the “Footprint in the Sand” poem. It’s God carrying me.

I like to think that if Jesus were walking among us today, he’d be wearing birkenstocks. He seems to me a “birk” sort of person. And if he were in WA state, he’d be wearing them with wool socks.

I think of St. Teresa’s prayer – we are his hands, his feet . . . and I see so many Jesus-people walking this world, doing what needs to be done.

I love thinking of you, JE, doing what you do, living your young life, knowing that you are walking around in Jesus shoes, shoes meant for walkin’ his “way”.

Sometimes my “Jesus shoes” are snowshoes that get me outside in winter, into the quiet contemplation of a snowy woodland…my own kind of hermitage.
