I fill with Gratitude

by Sister Julie on November 25, 2011  J.M.J.A.T.

We just celebrated Thanksgiving here in the United States. But everywhere at anytime we can give thanks. So, on this day, for what are you thankful? What or who fills you with gratitude?

What was said to the rose that made it open
was said to me here in my chest.

What was told the Cypress that made it strong
and straight, what was

whispered the jasmine so it is what it is, whatever made
sugarcane sweet, whatever

was said to the inhabitants of the town of Chigil in
Turkestan that makes them

so handsome, whatever lets the pomegranate flower blush
like a human face, that is

being said to me now. I blush. Whatever put eloquence in
language, that’s happening here.

The great warehouse doors open; I fill with gratitude,
chewing a piece of sugarcane,

in love with the one to whom every that belongs!

Poem by Rumi, a 13th c. Persian Muslim poet, theologian, and Sufi mystic

For what am I thankful:
For the difficulties I have had with my computer today I am thankful because I now have a huge feeling of confidence and accomplishment as I have won the difficulties of formatting the celebration booklet for the 50th anniversary of my religious profession.

I am very grateful for the opportunities I have had in those 50 years, having spent most of my working life in education of deaf children and their families. This was most enriching and diverse.

I am very grateful for having started my religious life as it was before Vatican 2 as I know both the old and the new. ( I will be more grateful when we go back to the teachings of that Council !!)

I am very grateful for the Dominican understanding of Obedience which has allowed me to put ideas forward and have them encouraged and sanctioned. One of the most important of these was the idea that parents are the first educators of their children and we have been able to
achieve this by moving towards integrated education in a unique model so that all our students are indeed integrated both at home and at school.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to be involved in research into the fitting of the “Bionic Ear” and that our students were the first to be implanted at pre-school age.

I am very grateful to belong to an 800 year old Order and to be celebrating at present the first OP community sermon 500 years ago by the first Dominicans in the Americas —- a foretaste of “Liberation Theology”.

I am grateful for this community to which I feel I belong though I do not post very often.

I feel grateful to know that, having said all this, you will answer my request for prayers on the 2nd Dec. and on the 29th Dec. which is the real date of the anniversary.

P.S. I recently read a diary quotation that said “When we make plans, God laughs. God was indeed laughing when my parents made plans for my secondary education. If their plans were not subverted (by God ??), I would now be a Brigidine !!

I am thankful for the beauty of the earth – especially where I live, here in the Washington Rain Forest. And I am thankful for people like Joan (above) who have given their lives and talents to serve God and the church, and who serve as a sign of hope to me. May their memories will keep alive the great movements of the Spirit among us. I am grateful for my children and grandchildren who are living the kind of lives I would have hoped for them – and who are such great signs of hope for the future.

I’m most thankful for my family, they’re coming to understand my vocation more and respect me more through it.

I am grateful for this community
I am grateful to God for his work in my life
I am grateful that I have found my spiritual home
I am grateful for my family whom I love. But who also drive me nuts
I am grateful to the holy spirit who has been guiding me throtugh these difficult months of interior work
I am grateful to God for drawing me closer to him day by day
I am grateful that I am able to truly see Jesus as my brother and Mary as my mother.
Amen
