Adrian Dominican Sisters pray the Divine Office at the Convent Chapel at Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette, Illinois. The Adrian Dominicans founded the school in 1958. Four Dominican sisters from Bavaria arrived in New York City in 1853 to minister to The growing German Catholic community. A small group of sisters went to Adrian, Mich., in the 1880s. The congregation pursued ministries of education, healthcare and social services throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

IHM Sisters, Monroe, Mich.: The St. Mary Academy girls had riding lessons on their class schedule and some brought their own horses from home. The Archives includes a letter written on Aug. 24, 1939, from Bettijane Warner of Detroit: “Dear Sister Miriam, I am writing to ask you if it will be all right to bring my horse to school the week following my arrival at the academy.” The riding academy closed in 1942 when Riding Master Russ Sweeny went to military service in World War II.

Brief History
The Benedictine Nuns of St. Emma Monastery are pictured here in 1931. The sisters came from Germany at the request of their Mother house to work in the kitchens and dining rooms of the St. Vincent Archabbey, Seminary and College. Since then, the sisters have established a monastery and two retreat houses. In January of 2010, they gained the canonical status of an Independent Priory. #HistoryNun www.stemma.org
