A live discussion on a forum is when we all agree to be on the forum at a certain time. Here are a few tips (in no particular order) for having a live discussion.
1. Informal writing - when you are writing a comment, it doesn't have to be perfect writing style. This is more like a casual conversation, and your writing can reflect that. Also, don't worry about changing font color/size/style. Plain and simple are virtues here. And please do not use ALL CAPS as it is difficult to read and is the equivalent of shouting.
2. Listen, Respond, Share - take time to reflect on what one another is saying and respond from your heart. Be sure to listen to what others are saying and respond directly to them. Try to build on the comments by responding to a person and adding to it by sharing your experience.
3. View new comments - in order to see new comments, click on your refresh button (usually looks like two green arrows on your top menu bar)
4. Mistakes - you can easily delete or edit your comment (only if absolutely necessary) using the buttons "delete" or "edit" located on the lower right corner of your comment.
5. Length and number of comments - since this is conversation-esque, keep comments relatively short but long enough for people to grab on to what you are saying. Conversations starters might be a bit longer as will some more in-depth topics. Respond frequently to keep conversations going. And don't forget to refresh your screen to see new comments!
6. Communicating "body" language online - Because we can't see one another and see how we are reacting, it's important to communicate this in your writing. The emotions can help (the smiley faces) but also to say things that help others determine if your comment was tentatively/joyfully/nervously said.
7. Registration - the forum is open to any one to view, but only registered members of A Nun's Life Discussion Forum can submit a comment or start a topic. Registration is free and simple. There's a link to
register in the top menu.
8. Help - if you have no idea what to do or if something feels like it's just not working, please don't hesitate to send me a private message (my username is sisterjulie) or to email me (sisterjulie (at) anunslife (dot) org) directly. I'll respond immediately to help you fully participate in the conversation. I will also be present at the discussion to help out in any way.
