In This House of Brede by Rumer Godden is a classic and a good read. It's also a long read, weighing in at 656 pages in the Loyola Classics reprint.

I'm all in favor of a discussion of "Brede"--one of my all-time favorite novels! By the way, the film Julie referred to is available for purchase pretty inexpensively (I own it), and is also on Netflix for those of you in the US. Peggy
