This Friday, A Nun’s Life is hosting our third Community Podcast on Saints, Food, and Prayer. Our community podcasts are free-for-all opportunities for you all to come up with a topic and the content for a podcast which Sister Maxine and I host. The first two we had were Thanksgiving rituals, food, and prayers and Advent and Christmas rituals, food, and prayers. Various readers and listeners of A Nun’s Life community joined us live on the air or sent things in ahead of time.

Here’s how you can participate in the Saints, Food, and Prayer community podcast. We invite you to join us for the live show this Friday at 6:45 p.m. Central Time (your timezone). All you have to do is show up here at our website http://aNunsLife.org and when we go live, the audio will start playing on any page of our website. If you’d like to read or participate in the simultaneous chat, go directly to http://anunslife.org/live.

We’d love for you to add your voice to the on-air discussion by telling us about your favorite saint. Here’s how that works: you pick a saint (e.g., Teresa of Avila) , tell us who she or he is (She’s from Avila, Spain … she was a Carmelite nun and Doctor of the Church … she wrote about prayer) and why the saint is important to you (e.g., she’s helped me in my life as a nun, she is a companion in prayer). Then you can offer an interesting tidbit about the person, a prayer or quote written by or about the saint, or (because we tend to chat about food after our evening podcasts as we are preparing for supper) a food item or recipe relevant to the saint or her/his native land (e.g., a recipe for Pan de Horno — Spanish bread — that you tried or would like to try)

A few folks have already tagged their saint (I know Suze claimed Teresa of Avila) … but alas my list has disappeared. So, for all, please let Sister Maxine and I know who you’d like to share about. We’d like to have you share on the air with us (about 5-7 minutes) so you can call us (will give number out at beginning of podcast) or you can send us a private email with your phone number and we’ll call you!

Sister Max and I haven’t decided who we are going to talk about yet so stay tuned!

Sister Margaret Chapman, IHM, joined Sisters Julie and Maxine for the podcast. Sister Margaret is the president of Compassionate Companions, a ministry in which sisters and other advocates serve as guardians for adults whose physical or mental condition affects their ability to speak or act independently.

Is being a nun the hardest part decision you ever made in your entire life? What’s the different between a nun and a normal girl? What’s the benefit of being a nun?

Do you know any physically handicapped sisters or nuns? Do religious communities allow physically disabled women as sisters?

Does living as a sister prevent me from seeing my friends, relatives, or parents? Are catholic nuns or sisters required relocate to different parts of the country if the order asks them to?

what is religious deportment? how essential is it for religious to conform to it?

The turn of the new year often fills us with ideas and inspirations to try something new, to set out on a new path for the new year. To those of you who have entertained (however briefly or maybe for a long time!) with the idea of becoming a sister or nun, I invite you to consider the following:

Do you long for something more, a something that just can’t seem to be filled by your current work, relationships, endeavors, etc. even though you experience these as good?

Are you interested in deepening your life of faith through prayer, ministry, and community with others who share similar values, vision, and mission?

Are you open to the Spirit and the often surprising ways the Spirit leads?

Are you attracted to the life of Jesus the Christ and to lives of saints and holy people who strove to follow Jesus and live the Gospel?

Do you wish to live and think and “be” in a way that places the common good ahead of other goods such as personal wants?

Are you able to let go of preconceived images of what religious life is or should be?

Can you accept the humanity of yourself and of sisters and nuns and at the same time trust that the Spirit is alive and well in and through our humanity?

Do you feel both attracted to and terrified of the though of religious life, wondering perhaps, why God would call you of all people?

Are you willing to use your gifts, talents, experience, energy, and passion for God’s purposes and for a common mission and life in God?

Are you up for the greatest adventure of your life?

This is your invitation, your opportunity to take a step toward responding to this call. You don’t have to have it all figured out, or rationalize it, or be without doubt or fear. That’s all part of the package. Yo are invited to take a leap of faith, trusting that though you do not know where it will lead, that God is right here with you and will lead you to good.

What do you do now? Start reading and doing any of the suggestions on our page How to Become a Nun. Say something to that sister you admire but were afraid to say anything to about your desire. If you’ve felt attracted to the mission and life of Sister Maxine, myself, or other sisters here at A Nun’s Life, then take a chance and contact us. Check out Catholics on Call. Call the vocation director of the community you’ve been thinking about. Attend a retreat or day of prayer where you can explore how your desires and attractions are part of God’s call to you.

There is only one thing left to say.

Begin.

* * *

Please join us at 6:00 p.m. CST (your time zone) for Praying with the Sisters podcast, a ministry of A Nun’s Life.

Welcome to our first ever Community Podcast, a podcast that features you! your favorite food, meal prayers, recipes, music, and food stories.

On this our inaugural podcast we celebrate Thanksgiving food and everything related to it. Our podcast format is a bit different from our other podcast because the idea as well as much of the content comes from you, our listeners and members of our community here at A Nun’s Life Ministry.

And you’ll be hearing voices other than Sister Maxine and myself. We’ve got a few folks scheduled and we’d be delight to hear from anyone who’d like to comment or ask a question about whatever we are discussing or who would like to offer their Thanksgiving-related story or recipe.

After the show, we’ll post recipes in the comment box below. If you’d like to share your favorite Thanksgiving recipe, please share it below.

First we’ll have our normal prayer at 6 p.m. Central Time (your time zone) followed by the Thanksgiving Food Podcast starts at 6:30 p.m.

The fun starts at http://anunslife.org/live

See you soon!

After every evening podcast for the last couple of weeks, we’ve ended up chatting with folks about food — usually because we’ve either just had dinner or are preparing dinner. So we thought we’d try out a podcast that features food! And since U.S. Thanksgiving is around the corner — and it is the biggest food holiday in these parts — we thought we’d focus on Thanksgiving food.

The podcast is going to be on Tuesday, November 24, at 6:30 p.m. Central Time (your time zone), right after Praying with the Sisters podcast at 6:00. Join us at http://anunslife.org/live .

For the show, we need to hear from YOU about all things Thanksgiving food-related:

Your favorite recipe (appetizer, entree, side dish, dessert or beverage) and any story or tradition associated with your recipe

A prayer of thanksgiving or a meal prayer that you use at Thanksgiving time

Music or video related to Thanksgiving holiday or thanksgiving in general

Any story about the Thanksgiving holiday

Each person can then talk about their item on the air with us. You’ll need to call into TalkShoe by phone at 724-444-7444 and enter call ID 60385# or by using ShoePhone which is basically calling via the Internet. If you’re not sure how this works, stick around after prayer on Monday evening and we can try it out with you. If you want to use an image or video with your item, all you need is the URL address of the image or video. You can upload either to your Facebook account if you have one or Flickr for images and YouTube for video.

Everyone is welcome, whether you have something for “show-and-tell” or not! Listen in and chat with us in the chat room!

For those of you who would like to prepare something, let us know letting us know what it is (or at least what category from above) so we can schedule everyone in. If it’s a recipe, you can email it to us or post it on Tuesday’s blog post.

Look forward to hearing from you! It will be a food and thanksgiving podcast festival! Any other suggestions or questions, just let us know!

Here’s a preview of what Sister Maxine and I are bringing …

yummy and easy cornbread recipe

a story about nearly being arrested due to a turkey

religious symbolism around Thanksgiving

a story about a Thanksgiving blowout

discussion question: what do vegetarians do at Thanksgiving?

Once I finish my degree, pay off student loan debts, and do some traveling to work in teaching organizations internationally, I’ll be in my early 40s. Is it okay to consider entering religious life then?

Questions abound about Catholic sisters and nuns and about prayer, God, faith, and religious life. Over the last few years, we’ve received literally thousands of questions ranging from “Can nuns pluck their eyebrows?” (Yes) to “How do I know if God is calling me to be a nun?” to “Why does it feel like God is silent in my life?” These are all good questions and we are glad to talk with you about them.

We’ve explored this in a variety of ways using email and the blog itself for asking and responding to questions. Last week we did a test podcast to see if a live audio show would be a good format. We had a good experience and good feedback so we are going to start a weekly Ask Sister podcast that will be live and then recorded so that you can listen to it or download it at your convenience.

We’ll take your questions in several different ways:

comment below on the day of the Ask Sister podcast

email us at “sister AT anunslife DOT org” any time before an Ask Sister podcast

comment in the chat room during a live show

calling in during a live show (still working on this technology!)

However you share your question, your last name, email address, and any other private information will be kept confidential.

So … on with the show!

Visit ANunsLife.org/live
Today
12 p.m. Central Time / UTC-5

Here’s what we have in store for you today:

“I’m going to enter college next fall and I’m thinking about becoming a nun. Are there any specific colleges or programs that would help me?”

“How does one cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus?”

We are pleased to have Sister Mary Jane Hahner, CSFN, nunning the mic today with Sister Maxine. I’m in Washington, DC, at the moment but may pop in to listen in between meetings.

We look forward to talking with you. Listen to other Ask Sister podcasts.

We’ve got a number of questions already, for example:

What do Catholic nuns have to give up to become a nun, other then marriage or sex? Do nuns give up jewelry and music and many things like that?

Is true forgiveness “unconditional”? Should our forgiveness of someone require the offender to be “worthy”?

Why it is so hard to have enough courage to follow your heart?

You know what that means … Halloween is creeping up on us, slowly but surely and spookily.

Happy Feast of Saint Teresa of Avila! I went to bed last night all giddy because of today’s feast. It honestly felt like Christmas Eve morning! I don’t exactly know why I have been feeling so excited about this feast day. As you know, Teresa of Avila is near and dear to my heart. She is one of the few saints that I feel so present to me. And it’s not just Teresa herself. It’s everything she stands for, the way she lived her life, and encouraged her sisters and everyone to seek God through both the contemplative moments of life and the active moments of life.

So I guess for me to celebrate her feast day is also a celebration of my relationship with her and my relationship with God! It’s not a bad way to spend a day!

As part of this day, I invite you to join Sister Maxine and I as we welcome another of Teresa of Avila’s friends, Mirabai Starr. Mirabai will be joining us for a live podcast today at 7:00 p.m. Central Time (time zone converter). The two sisters who died also had blood sisters in our IHM community so please keep them especially in your prayers — Margaret and Marge.

Sister Maxine has been nunning the mics while I’ve been gone. She’s been leading our Praying with the Sisters podcast at noon Central Time. I’ll be back on the air with her today. Please join us for a pause for prayer. This week and last we’ve been praying the Angelus and taking prayer requests via our chat room. Beginning next week, we are going to shift the format a bit and use the scripture readings of the day as the basis of our prayer. We’ll continue to pray for your intentions. Praying with the Sisters is live weekly, Monday through Thursday.

And don’t forget about Nun News Roundup on Fridays at noon Central Time. Sister Maxine and I bring you the latest news on the nunfront plus our stunning commentary! We won’t have one this week due to unforeseen events but we will be back next week with our full lineup.

They’ll join us to discuss the newly released study on Catholic Vocations and Religious Life. This is a very important study, and if you haven’t done so already, read through the executive summary and other related resources (Mythbusters section is quite interesting).

We’ll ask them about the survey itself, its aim and who participated, and also some specifics about the survey such as what it means to create/have a “culture of vocations”. Since both guests have expertise in the field of vocations, we’ll ask them for their observations on and advice for vocation directors and people considering a vocation.

We’d like you to join us by listening and also by participating in the chat room during the live broadcast. The chat room is just for listeners of the show only and it is the place where you can interact with one another and with us. During the broadcast you can ask your questions and offer comments to our guests which Sister Maxine and I will read on the air.

How do you listen? Just come to ANunsLife.org tomorrow … there will be a post with all the info that you need.

For an email reminder tomorrow, please leave a comment below with your correct email in the box that asks for your email or email us directly (NOTE: your email address is never made public).

What do you think about the survey? What questions do you have for Patrice and Brother Paul about the survey or about vocations in general — e.g., discerning a vocation, attracting new members, the state of religious life, etc.? Let’s get a good list going!

Streaming Audio – Listen Only. Click the button to start the audio. It will take a minute or two for the audio to start streaming. If you have trouble with streaming audio, then try #2.

Audio via Phone Line – Listen Only. Call into the show by phone to listen. Dial 724-444-7444 and enter Call ID number 60385 and then enter the # sign.

You can also participate in the conversation. Click the link that says “Join Now To Participate”. A new window will open on your screen that says “TalkShoe Web Client” at the top. This screen allows you to see a chat box and also to see a list of other participants.

Text Chat. You can ask questions or make comments in the chat box. These may or may not be picked up on air.

Phone Chat. You’ll see a box with instructions to call into the show (if you are not already connected by phone). Dial 724-444-7444 and enter Call ID number 60385 and then enter the # sign. Sister Maxine or I can “unmute” you so that you can be heard by all when you have a question or comment.

It’s actually quite easy to use. Try it out. Once you familiarize yourself with the basics, you are ready to go. Since we’ve not done this before, we’re not sure how smoothly we’ll be able to handle phone questions/comments/responses, but we’re counting on you to bear with us and offer helpful feedback!

Thanks for being part of this live discussion and new format! We think that this will have great possibility and allow for more fruitful, adventurous discussion!

P.S. The discussion forum will be open for any ongoing conversations on the book.

Sister Pat was my gracious host while I was on a recent trip to San Francisco. While in San Francisco, Sister Pat and I sat down for a chat about her life and ministry as a Catholic nun. Sister Pat is a Promoter of Preaching and the Vocation Director for the San Rafael Dominicans.

Enjoy this A Nun’s Life Podcast! The play button is at the end of this post. Among other things, you’ll hear about nuns preaching, Saint Catherine of Siena, stories of Sister Pat’s sisters, and Sister Pat’s advice to young people thinking about religious life.
