CBS Calls Vieira

by Sister Julie on April 5, 2007  J.M.J.A.T.

in a nun's life ministry, blog post, news on the nunfront

I had an unexpected phone call yesterday from a producer at CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. At first I thought maybe they were looking for Meredith Vieira, but no, it was for me. On Fridays they do a segment called Assignment America where viewers choose the story that they want CBS news coorespondent Steve Hartman to cover.

Every Friday we present three story pitches and you get to vote for the story you think sounds most interesting. Whichever story gets the most votes by 12 a.m. ET on Sunday is the winner.
(Assignment America)

So the producer asked if I’d like to be one of those potential stories. Sure, I said. So here’s the scoop:

This Friday April 6 on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, viewers will be given a pitch about my story along with two others. It is up to America to go to www.cbsnews.com to vote on the story that they would like Hartman to do and then that story will air the following Friday.

While I prefer to be a behind-the-scenes kinda gal, I am pleased to have an opportunity to talk about what it is like to be a Catholic nun today and the wonderful adventure that is religious life.

So tune into CBS News on Friday (after you’ve observed the holy day, of course). If you’d like to see my story covered, go online to www.cbsnews.com after the broadcast and cast your vote.

And as we say in Chicago, “Vote early and vote often!”

Hi-
Steve Hartman is brilliant. His series “Everybody Has A Story”, never failed to move us. I imagine he will be the perfect person to report on your life, your vocation and your on-line adventure! I’ll definitely tune in and vote.
All the best,
Lee

Sr. Julie,

Wow! I’m so excited for you and the well-spring of positive attention you and the blog are receiving. I’ll be sure to get on the CBS site and vote, early and often. :)

Peace,
Jennifer

Sister Julie, I am so excited for you. I am in Canada and even so will try to vote for you, you and your blog are so very amazing. Not sure if my vote will be accepted but will certainly try.
In this Holy time of the year, may your experiences be wonderful and your blessings many

Dear Sister Julie,
As a Catholic school kid taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, i know the meaning of obedience to a nun…so of course i voted for you! And since my mom’s from Chicago, i’ll vote often!
Now can i read your blog?
Take care and i hope you have a happy Easter.
Warmest,
Michael (Baton Rouge, LA)

do you feel joy in your heart by all that attention?
do you feel happy when people seek you out?
do you sometimes do things partly to be praised?
if you answered yes to any of the above then you are worshiping praise and not the lord, i am sure you will find a convoluted way to justify yourself, but don’t we all. just be honest to your heart and don’t waste your time. and please don’t bother to reply. to me! may god guide you to righteousness.

We need to reconcile the worlds’ great religions and discover the wisdom lineage within all of them. Blogs can be a big help in this. All of the religions value their particular “spin”, which has made them successful but this can cause separation and lack of deeper knowledge and understanding. This season in the Hebrew lineage has Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron as a great leader. She and her miraculous well are a bridge of wisdom for all peoples. Read about it at

Sister Julie,
Love your site! Saw the article on CBS and came to visit…I will add this to “my favorites”!

I live in upstate New York and work at the local Daughters of Charity hospital. Although I am Methodist, through a strange series of events I was “found” by Thomas Merton and Bede Griffiths (among others) which has certainly changed my life (all good). I now visit the OSB monastery near here a few times a year which has also had a big impact on me. Since my daughter and grandkids live in Chicago, we visit there a few times a year (I was able to visit the Merton exhibit at Loyola this past Christmas).

Best wishes, looking forward to future visits!

Grace & Peace,
John Collins
ps: also a cyclist!

Thanks for all the comments and welcome to new visitors. I am humbled to have my blog featured in various places. Being a behind-the-scenes kind of person (and rather introverted), it is a challenge for me to go public and to talk about what I do and why. The reason I am willing to do this is because I want to not only spread the word about religious life, but I want to spead the Good News and create a welcoming place in cyberspace where people can dialogue, ask their questions, and know that they are heard.

Well? Is Steve Hartman paying you a visit? Can’t seem to find the voting results on the CBS website. Inquiring minds want to know.

Are we able to see your cbs interview online, maybe youtube??

Sister Julie April 20, 2007 at 10:31 am

I haven’t found a video anywhere of it. If you find one, please let me know. It was probably only 20 seconds long or so, just a teaser. There was no on-camera interview since the substitute teacher had the most votes.
