Nun More Deadly

by Sister Julie on July 23, 2007

In my unending search for nun-related videos (recently rekindled by Pamela who found 20/20’s episode on cloistered nuns on YouTube), I discovered this short film: “Nun More Deadly”. It is a very clever film noir detective movie.

Here’s my favorite quote from the detective who temporarily loses his ability to form hardboiled similies:

There was something about the nun I didn’t like. Something shifty. No nunness. None nunnish. Unnunlike. A certain nunlessness about her.

“Winner of the audience award for best Irish short at the Cork International Film Festival, the award for best fiction at the Sligo Short Film Festival. and the Tiernan MacBride award for best Irish short at the Galway Film Fleadh.”

There is something intriguing about the idea of a person, male or female, adopting a religious disguise, either to perpetrate a crime or to escape discovery. There is an almost sinister feel to it when we see a known criminal dressed as a monk, nun,or priest whether hiding in a monastery or out in the world. I believe there was a film or novel awhile back that revolved a series of murders that took place within an isolated anglo-catholic seminary in England. A very eerie situation, rather like a murder mystery evening, but for “real”…whom do we suspect, when we think we know all of our fellow inmates?? The possibilities are endless!
