Nunday – Franciscan Sisters

by Sister Julie on February 1, 2010  J.M.J.A.T.

in blog post, catholic sisters and nuns, ministry, nun images and stereotypes

It is Monday which means NUNDAY! Yup, we’re back with photos of Catholic sisters and nuns in our never-ending campaign to help folks get to know real sisters and nuns and to change the face of nun imagery on the web (which, if you haven’t noticed, is heavily populated by nun caricatures and erotica).

Sisters and nuns and lay folks from across the world have been sending us photos and wonderful stories. Today we are featuring a photo from our friend Sister Lovina Pammitt, OSF, a Franciscan Sister of the Sacred Heart.

The photo is of Sister Mary Barbara Hassler and Sister Patricia Ann Murray and was taken during an outreach ministry week in Danville, Illinois.

Sister Mary Barbara works as the Religious Formation Coordinator at Saint Joseph School in Libertyville, Illinois and is the Novice Minister for the community.

Sister Pat has been the Director of Religious Education at Saint Charles Borromeo Church in Fort Wayne, and recently moved to West Virginia to work in social service ministry.

To see all the photos of Catholic sisters and nuns and links to their stories, visit the A Nun’s Life Facebook photo album. If you’ve got a photo and story (how you know Sister) of a real Catholic sister or nun, check out the details on submitting your photo for consideration.

Completely unrelated fact. There is a wonderful folk singer in PEI named Patricia Murray. She is not a nun. Love the nun pics Sister Julie, keep them coming.

Sister Julie,
Thank you for continuing to share pics and stories about Sisters living in various Religious communities and participating in various worldly endeavors. Sister Mary Barbara Hassler and Sister Patricia Anne Murray are making wonderful contribution in Outreach Ministry. I love sharing pics/stories with High School gals who only see Sisters in teaching roles for about 30/45 minutes … a few times a week.

Jeannie,
I found Patricia Murray (PEI) in a “You Tube” video. She has the voice of an angel. I was reminded of the Celtic Women Singers. I love their version of “You Raise Me Up”

Peace to all,
Kathleen

The Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart (Frankfort, IL) had a huge influence on my life. They were my teachers from grade three through high school. They shaped me into the person I am today. I am forever in their debt. When I think of today’s nuns, I think of this vibrant congregation of women living the Gospel life in their neighborhoods, workplaces, parishes, and more. Francis of Assisi would be pleased with these 21st Century nuns. They “get” what it means to serve the Lord by serving His people.

Thanks for writing, Rosemary! I’m happy that they are my community.
