Ask Sister podcast is a live podcast where you have the opportunity to engage with us and ask questions about nuns, prayer, religious life, or pretty much anything in between!
Here are some of the questions we addressed in this Ask Sister podcast:
- What advice do you have for wanting to enter a religious order but having debt?
- What can you do when God is distant and you have a “dark night of the soul” moment?
- What happened to talk about Satan or the Devil in religious education, preaching, or other teachings of the church? It’s still one of our biggest temptations.
- Do I have the “idea” of a sister right?

Great podcast Sisters!
Just a few things to add sense I wasn’t around..! :p
If anyone is looking to read a religious book on a charismatic and amazing saint… “The Family Who Overtook Christ” is about St. Bernard. It is a wonderful book to show how each person explores a different path in God’s plan.
About the Dark Night feeling… I stubbed across this piece of scripture when suffering from depression…. “I have come into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness” (John 12:46). It may not make sense while you are in this darkness but as you see through the darkness one can move and trust in the light!
Thanks for answering my question! I am glad you got into the history of it and the theology behind the concept too. Good point about not knowing about if our “good” choices are good or not!
Talk tomorrow for prayer!

Just listened to the podcast… great show as always! Wanted to pull a thought from the “idea of a sister” bit. During my retreat, it was pointed out to us that religious life unlike marriage or holy orders wasn’t a sacrament on it own, however, it was about living out more fully the sacrament of baptism and making our lives into a more visible sign of our baptism. What are your thoughts?
Focusing on the middle two aspects of this podcast… I think they are intertwined, I feel you are right in that God isn’t testing us but just that sometimes Satan can be a stronger influence at that moment in time. I believe that Satan is always fighting for our souls. (Think the movie “Ghost”, when the bad guy dies and Patrick Swayze sees the evil spirits whisk him away– the only difference in my mind is that they would have also fought for Patrick’s soul since he didn’t go directly to the Light. That’s as scary a Hollywood scene as any made as far as I’m concerned–but I digress). Satan is always on the hunt to expand his army. And didn’t all the Saints have these moments of darkness? It’s said that Padre Pio fought with Satan every night.
I think it’s wrong to leave Satan out of our children’s education. I think he is a very real threat to our souls. I had a Benedictine Nun tell me a year ago that Cancer was of Satan. Let’s just say for a moment that she was right. I do not believe that cancer is of Satan, btw., but extrapolate with me for a moment… There are a lot of very good people who have died from cancer and who suffer from cancer. What better way to test our love for God? Because God won’t test us but Satan will. And in doing so, maybe Satan isn’t testing the afflicted but also the loved ones of the afflicted? (Also, could you confer with some of your Benedictine Sister’s about this belief? I’ve always thought maybe I heard her wrong).
I just think that Satan isn’t given near enough credit these days for being the pitfall that he is, so I disagree with not teaching more about him and the perils of hell. After all, Angels can visit us in many forms and even be personified as Raphael was in the book of Tobit. And Raphael was only an archangel where Satan was top-dog angel, a Seraph, so wouldn’t it stand to reason that he can show up as anything? The Nuns who taught me (years ago) didn’t have any trouble reminding us of this every day. lol
I hate to sound all fire-and-brimstone, but I think he’s more of a threat than most people realize. But I also think that his army is growing by leaps and bounds just simply because of lack of awareness and a lack of religious education…. or is this my inherent Catholic upbringing talking? Being taught a healthy fear of Satan from a young age has made me much more aware that not only does he walk the earth in many forms I think he puts things in our paths that we aren’t aware of until it’s too late.
I hate that I missed this podcast live. I would have liked to see some comments in the chat room.
BTW, chocolate, IS inherently good!!
As always, love the show!
