We also addressed some of the questions in the book Nuns Having Fun such as:

  • What do you wear to bed?
  • Do you get to choose where you live?
  • What do you carry in your pockets?

What do I wear to bed? Sometimes it’s sweats, most times it’s pjs or a sleepshirt. I really don’t care as long as I am comfortable. (In the old days, the sisters had sleep habits, sleep scapulars, and sleep veils. I’m soooo happy it’s the 21st century!)

Do I get to choose where I live? Well, I got to pick out my room before I moved to New Mexico–there are 55 bedrooms here, so it took a while for me to decide.

What do you carry in your pockets? Besides lint? (=^D Keys and cellphone are crucial. I’m on the local governance team and need to be available at all times. (Checking my pocket) And notes for what I need to do next. Bye!

My biggest ‘theme’ for this year will probably, and should be, one of openness. I’m a freshman in college and the past couple weeks I’ve been very confused and completely open to wherever God is calling me. So I’m going spend a lot of this year exploring all the different possibilities, especially all that I have been closed off to before. My relationship with God has been strong, but this year I am going to start taking things deeper and start “dating Him.” Therefore I’ll be spending a lot more time in prayer and solitude and praising Him! I scheduled this semester so that I could go to daily mass, and I’ll be waking up early and praying the rosary daily. :) I am very excited for all the newness this year has to offer!

Angela, that sounds wonderful – you sound very clear, open and focused! I’ve also been feeling a pull towards daily mass as a way to deepen my relationship with God. Your post is inspiring me give it some serious thought, and wonder about how I might organize my life to make this a priority, odd as it seems to those around me.

Thank you! Daily mass has definitely been a wonderful aspect to my faith life! I was only able to go three times a week last semester, but even just from that my days were very blessed. I’m sure any effort you are able to make will be very much worthwhile. :)

My theme for this year is very simple – to focus on listening to God, having an open heart, and execution. Too often, I am the kind of person to want to make others happy, focus on others needs, and neglect me in the process. This year I truly want to make a shift on that. Granted I understand this will take baby steps and not be achieved in a week or month (as most resolutions seem to last) which is why I am not calling it a “resolution” – instead I’m calling it a “a change of mind, spirit, and action”. My goals this year are to continue to strengthen my relationship with God, start doing for me and continue to give to others with my whole heart as I keep an open mind and open heart to new life experiences. :)

This prayer of St. Teresa – as set to music by John Michael Talbot – sums up what I think my theme for this year will be:

God alone is enough. God alone is enough.
Whoever has God wants for nothing at all.
Let nothing trouble you. Let nothing frighten you.
Everything passes. But God will never change.
Patient endurance will obtain everything. . .
