Here are some of the questions we addressed in this Ask Sister podcast:
- what to say: I’m thinking about becoming a religious sister, but I don’t have anyone to talk to. I have already approached my pastor about it, but honestly, I didn’t know what to say.
- what not to say: Is it disrespectful to say “Hello sweetheart” to a nun?
- relating with God: How do I trust and love God? How do I know that I’m doing it correctly?

Hello, sweetheart. LOVE IT. Call me old fashioned, but I stick with, “Hello, Sister. ” Speaking of sister, one of my friends who is a religious gets a kick out of refering to herself as Sister. As in, “Tell Sister where your homework is.” Her favorite is, “Look at Sister when you speak to her.” It reminds her of the sisters she had when she was in grammar school. Plus, it gives her students a funny When I Was In Catholic School story to tell one day.
“what not to say: Is it disrespectful to say “Hello sweetheart” to a nun?”
I just want to say something about this. I went to a convent school and have been surrounded by nuns of every discription for years. Now I am also a complete messer! haha… But I really dont think it is disrespectful to call nuns “Sweetheart”, “Darling” or “Gorgeous” if you are on a personal relationship with that nun. I am very friendly with our Parish Nun, St. Bridget she is 89 years old and she loves the way I call her “Wonderwoman”. But I would never out of resepect greet a nun for the first time as Sweetheart or anything of the likes!
Nuns are normal people too… And if a friendship develops between you and a Nun u are intitled to refer to eachother as “sweetheart”, “darling”, “babe”, or “dude”… Well maybe Dude is pushing it! Leave that for the priests!!
As someone who has many religious friends I frequently refer to them as “ma chère”, which is french for my dear or “ma belle” which means my lovely. It’s something I say with all my friends. They are my friends and I treat them the same as any other friend whom I love and cherish.
I tend to agree with both of you! I think it is appropriate when you are in a personal relationship with that nun — and for her to be able to respond in kind! Clare, I would love to meet your Sister Wonderwoman!
Hey Sister Julie,
The podcast isnt working. I am getting just you saying “A nun’s life ministry!” and thats the lot! Just though i’d let you know so you can fix it up!! Many thanks!
