  • What was the hardest part in the beginning when you entered the convent?
  • Do you ever regret your choice to became a nun?
  • Are nuns required to shave their heads?
  • Is it normal to feel both terrified and excited about a possible calling to become a sister?

Hi Sisters,
Sounds like a great program! This “comment” has absolutely nothing to do with tonight’s Ask Sister podcast, but I didn’t know where else to post this recipe For Spinach Soup. (Where’s the little smiley face when you need one?)
My old Yoga instructor, from India, gave one to everyone in her group and claimed you would lose 1/2 lb a day for 10 days, if you followed it exactly. She said to drink the specified amount 5 min. before our lunch and also before dinner. Then eat your lunch or dinner, no diet needed. I’m passing this
info along in case anyone wants to lose 5 lbs. I’ve never done this program so I don’t know if it works or not, but she was a credible instructor, so maybe.
I use this soup as a full meal, it’s very good and is an awesome green , the consistency of split pea soup. She didn’t have a name for it except delicious spinach soup, so I am naming it “Hermit’s Spinach Soup” because it is a recipe for
one person, for one day. And other reasons.

Hermit’s Spinach Soup

1. Spinach – 1 bunch (chopped) fresh or frozen
2. Water – 3 cups
3. Onion – 1/2 onion chopped
4. Salt – optional, but a pinch helps the flavors blend better
5.Cumin- 1/2 tsp.
6. Whole grain bread – 2 slices
7.Fat free milk – 1 cup
8. Equal – 1 packet (I just use a tsp of honey)
or
8. Honey – 1 tsp.

Boil the first ingredients for 5 min.
Remove from heat.
Add the bread, allow mix to cool a little.
Beat mix in blender until smooth.
Divide into 2 equal portions ( 2 – 1 qt. jars work for me)
Keep one portion in fridge for dinner.
Add 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 of the sweetener
to other portion, and shake, or beat, well,
adding more water if needed.
Heat and eat or drink. ( yes, it’s a full qt. serving )

Shaved heads! Reminds me of novitiate and my very dear –and rascally!–classmate. We had just read novels on St. Francis of Assisi and made presentations to the group. Sr. Margaret was giving me a trim with the hair clippers when I mused aloud, “I wonder what it would be like to have a tonsure?” Well, with one very quick pass of the clippers she gave me one! It was nearly 4″ in diameter! All I could do was thank God that I wore a veil back then. It took forever to grow back, and it felt weird when the wind would blow my veil against the stubble.

Julia –
Assuming one could even tolerate this regimen, losing 1/2 pound a day for 10 days is dangerous. There is no secret to weight loss: enjoy your food and cut down on the size of the portions you eat.
