Ask Sister podcast is a live podcast where you have the opportunity to engage with us and ask questions about nuns, prayer, religious life, or pretty much anything in between!

During this podcast Sister Maxine and Sister Julie were joined by cohosts Sister Rose Bernadette and Sister Danielle, both IHM Sisters from Immaculata, Pennsylvania. Our gratitude for the wonderful hospitality of all the sisters at Villa Maria House of Studies.

Here are some of the questions we addressed in this Ask Sister podcast:

  • What advice do you have for a 15-year-old feeling called to religious life? Also, my mom wants me to become a mother not a nun. What should I do?
  • Are there nuns in Christian traditions other than Catholicism? What are they like and how would I find one?
  • In “The Nun’s Story,” Audrey Hepburn’s character was required to bring a dowry when she entered the convent. Is that common today?
  • What is Sister Julie’s vocation story? How did she discern her calling to become an IHM sister?

Do you have a question for us? Call our toll-free Voicemail Hotline at 888-703-4732 and leave a voicemail for us with your question. The congregation in a Nun’s Story was the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary in Belgium ;)

Loosely based on the life of Marie Louise Habets who was a nurse and ex-nun

I’m discerning with the Passionist Nuns in Whitesville, KY. They prefer a dowry upon entrance according to their vocation director. So a dowry is not completely unheard of in the US today.

Thanks, Amanda. Though it is true some communities have the practice of requesting a dowry, it is by far an uncommon practice according to the various sisters and nuns we’ve talked with.

I offer prayers of thanksgiving for the wonderful opportunity to meet Sister Julie, Sister Maxine, Beege and about 20 IHM Sisters at the Motherhouse in Immaculata, PA for the live “Ask Sister” podcast this past Friday night.

Sister Julie and Sister Maxine are exceptionally gifted at concurrently cultivating relationships with their live audience, video audience and chat room audience, interviewing guests, making everyone feel comfortable while focusing on numerous pieces of hardware and software equipment and programs.

It was an incredible and memorable experience. Thank You Sisters!
God Bless you,
Kathleen
