Ask Sister podcast is a live podcast where you have the opportunity to engage with us and ask questions about nuns, prayer, religious life, or pretty much anything in between!
Here are some of the questions we addressed in this Ask Sister podcast:
- Are the vows that Catholic sisters and nuns take made by God or by humans?
- Do file cabinets have souls?
- Is the vow of obedience always understood strictly?
- What are some of the distinctions between the terms nun, sister, consecrated virgin, and lay sister?
- Are brothers the male equivalents of sisters and nuns?

Thanks, Steve! Will it to the mix!
Hi, everyone!
I have a date (“just” a friend) and will have to leave early. But I will be with you inspirit throughout the night. Please keep BC in your prayers. The fires here are terrible. The smoke is all over the Province. It’s hitting the elderly and the sick the hardest, of course, but none of us are supposed to go outside. Things should be significantly better in the next day or two.
For our NL chat, do either of you have any thoughts about non-Americans entering American religious communities? Would we have to become American citizens to enter, I don’t know, say the IHMs in Monroe, Michigan? Do Canadians have to enter Canadian religious communities? Do we have to give up our Canadian citizenship? Such a huge question, I know. Probably can’t be answered over the phone, but I’m just wondering. God bless you both! Sorry I won’t be there longer tonight. See you soon!
Listening on Saturday morning. I have always meant to ask Sister Julie how she likes her Mac. Now I know.
(I hope there are Mac’s in Heaven, too.
please Sister whats the difference between a consecrated virgin and lay sister, can one be a contemplative consecrated virgin or contemplative lay sister? how and whats required
Hi Heldiy, We talked a bit about this question during this podcast. Being a contemplative can mean a variety of things including living a cloistered life or being a person who regularly practices contemplation. My suggestion is to listen to the podcast and gather some more information about being a consecrated virgin. And of course keep bringing this to your prayer to see how God is calling you. I strongly recommend a spiritual director (we’ll be talking about spiritual directors on today’s podcast). Also check out our guide to becoming a Catholic nun which has a lot of general info too for people discerning any calling.
dear sisters and chat room friends, returned home friday and a pleased to say that after talking to Sister Anne fr. the Sisters of St.Josephs
when I asked her if she thought God was calling me she said yes. I told my cousin and her family they we so happy for me. It was very positive all round.
my retreat was great and i was deeply moved.
I would like you to remember Sister Anne please she need all our prayers. You see she has cancer of the blood it is in remission but could come back anytime so she must have her blood tested once a month. Thank you
