- How do I address a vocation director’s concern that I am an only child?
- How do you know that God is really calling you? I feel like I have a void in my life.
- What happens when we are called but say no? What happens if we feel we are being called again? Is there such thing as a lost vocation?
- What’s a good age to start thinking about religious life?

Wait…why would being an only child be a concern? (Says the only child.) Sounds like it’s more an issue the parents would have to address, not the kid, if the kid has a vocation.
Interestingly, I’ve heard this concern before but from a mother of an only child worried about her daughter entering. I think you are right about the parent issue. And hey, what about those of us who are a middle child. We got issues too!
The only child question is a tough one. Maybe this story that happened in our community will help you understand why there might be a hesitation if a candidate is an only child:
There were four sisters in one family. The first three were accepted to the community, but he fourth one was told that someone had to look after her parents, so she got married instead. Guess who died first? Yup, the married one. The three sisters in community took turns taking a year off from community living and from ministry to care for both parents until they died.
The community is probably wondering what sort of plan or arrangements your parents have for when they retire, or if they get sick. This is a tough one. God bless you in your discernment!
