Ask Sister podcast is a live podcast where you have the opportunity to engage with us and ask questions about nuns, prayer, religious life, or pretty much anything in between!
Here are some of the questions we addressed in this Ask Sister podcast:
- Where does the Church stand with gambling such as betting on matches, playing poker, etc.? What about bingo?
- What is “inclusive language” all about? What’s wrong with using all-male language in prayer?
- What are the different titles that Catholic sisters and nuns use to refer to themselves and to their sisters in leadership positions?
- The nuns talk about what it means to have a right to life. Backdrop: young people, bullying, outing of others, controlling others, taking care of ourselves–and others–in the midst of our relationships in school, family, online communities, etc.

A question for tonight – and way ok if it needs to be tabled due to lack of time:
Been catching up on a few earlier ask sister podcasts from April-June.
1. In one it was mentioned that the IHM rings you wear come from a sister that was passed away. I was just struck by that! Wow! When did that tradition start? When you receive the ring – do you also get a biography of the sister who had it before, or do they just do a grab bag, or how exactly does it work? I know other orders wear jewelry – either pins or rings and sometimes rosaries depending on how they look – but didnt even consider where they came from until I heard what the IHMs do. It would be easy to thing that the tradition started due to financial constraints – but then that has no story to it. And then I also think about the 1950s when there was such an explosion of women joining religious communities like the IHMs – and I wonder were there enough rings to go around or did they have to kill off sister so and so…..
forgive me I am fresh today. Promise I will recover by the time of ask sister tonight.
I actually had two questions but forgot the second one. Will check with marguerite as we talked about both of them last night.
“see” you both soon
Excellent question! We’ve got a partial answer but have to do a little research to get the full schmoo. Will save this for next Ask Sister.
