I think the coffee question should be modified. lol It made me chuckle.
How about, where coffee is concerned, what would be considered moderation?
Interesting modification, LeeAnn! Are you also a person who has a preferential option for coffee? Given that I just talked SMX down from a 3rd pot of coffee before noon (she swears that it was only amounted to a measly cup of caffeine) a conversation about moderation would be, well, interesting.
I just love these questions!
1. What vows do a nun take? What would happen to a nun if she broke one of her vows? That would depend on the order. My Congregation takes the typical vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. Breaking a vow is a serious thing. What happens next depends on the severity of the act itself.
2. How can we live mindfulness, especially when we are always multitasking? Sr. Julie, this question just begs for your icon of the 3-handed Mary! (=^D
3. What are samples of your typical meals? are you allowed coffee?
Do nuns order pizza? We have a steam-table, so you can pick and choose what you prefer. Breakfast always includes eggs, a breakfast meat, hot cereal, cold cereal, toast and fruit. We have our main meal at noon, and that might mean meatloaf, roast beef, etc, with potatoes/rice/pasta, vegetables and salad. Our evening meal is lighter, including a selection of soups, sandwich fixings and one hot entree (for the sisters who work outside the convent and missed the main meal). Our favorite suppers are nachos, tacos, stuffed baked potatoes, and salad bar. Pizza is a treat that we might have once or twice a year. And there is no restriction on coffee. We have perked in the morning and there’s always instant for other times. If you want Starbucks, well, you can have as much as your allowance will allow!
4. What’s up with the four-week psalter and how do I know what week we’re in? There is an annual supplement called the Ordo which will tell you, or else consult that handy-dandy grid in the breviary itself. Next week is the Fist Sunday in Ordinary Time. [Putting on my liturgist hat now] “Ordinary” doesn’t mean “plain.” It refers to the numbering, the ordinal number. In liturgy School, they told us to think of it at “Growing Season” (hence, the green vestments). Before Lent we unpack the mysteries revealed in the Advent-Christmas Season, and after Pentecost, we unpack the mysteries revealed in the Lent-Easter Season.
I love that you love these questions AND give great responses!
YES! The three-handed Mary. Will have to pull her out for the podcast. Good thinking. Re: the food question … you had me at stuffed baked potatoes! And no doubt, pizza. YUM.EE.
Three-handed Mary??
That’s right, JE! And I’m not talking cards!
You cannot imagine how apt this podcast was for me today … esp the diving board analogy!! Sisters you ROCK!
